Variegated, green-marbled foliage, the Snow Angel Coral Bell (Heuchera sanguinea 'Snow Angel') has a gorgeous combination of colors that lights up the dappled shade garden! Also known as Alum Root, these perennials have unique light green ruffled foliage that is speckled, spattered, and streaked with light cream and darker green variegation! The pleated leaves, prominent veins, and textured leaf margins are just an added bonus!

In the springtime, pinkish-red flowers appear on reddish stems that are elegant and wiry. Lasting into the summer, Coral Bells are not known for their flowers, but for their foliage! But that won't stop flocks of bees, butterflies, and Hummingbirds that will stop by for a visit to sip the nectar.

These mounding perennials stay around 1 foot tall and wide at maturity but make up for their space-saving nature by showing off sheer radiant color! Extremely cold-hardy and heat tolerant, Snow Angel thrives throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9, and shrugs off the humidity, deer, rabbits, and most pests!

Planting and Application:

Snow Angel's variegated foliage lights up the garden in groupings and rows, or as solitary pops of color in Perennial beds, Cottage gardens, and mixed perennial plantings! The white and green leaves look especially showy around the edge of borders, woodland edges, Rock Gardens, or in mass to form an attractive groundcover!

The dainty blooms look fantastic in the garden and call pollinators, and look like finery in hummingbird gardens, while also filling your bouquets with airy, dainty filler. The smaller, space-saving size is highly adaptable in large and small gardens, containers and planters, around your pool, deck, porch, and patio! Ideal companion plants for Hosta, Ferns Strawberry Begonia, Iris, Lilies, and Peonies, you'll love the shade gardens that you will create with the varied and vivid foliage of Snow Angel and other Coral Bells!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This Coral Bell grows best in organically rich, humus, medium-moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. It does well in full sun in the northern part of its range and afternoon shade in the south. Plant these Perennials in almost any kind of soil, it's best in moderately moist, organically rich, and humusy sites with especially well-drained soil. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. An easy-care perennial, Coral Bells should be cut back in the early spring. Divide every 3-5 years to maintain vigor. Tolerating heat and humidity, it is low-maintenance and performs well even in the South where it can display evergreen tendencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prune Coral Bells?

Coral Bells do best when pruned in the early spring. Leaving the foliage intact as an extra blanket for winter protection over the crown. In some climates, Coral Bells can be semi-evergreen, so leaving those colorful leaves up all winter adds winter interest!

Do Coral Bells prefer sun or shade?

Do Coral Bells spread?

Coral Bells can spread into tidy mounds about 2-3 feet in width but do not spread by rhizomes or stolons further than where they're planted.

Where do Coral Bells grow best?

Coral Bells love a shaded site in enriched soil that is well-drained. They appreciate regular moisture and a mulched root zone.

Do Coral Bells attract hummingbirds?

Coral Bells are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.

What pairs with Coral Bells?

These shade-loving perennials pair with lacy Astilbe and Ferns, other coarse foliage plants like Hosta, and the lobed foliage of Columbines! Try pairing with Barrenworts and Bergenia too!
