Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Laced Up® Elderberry performs best in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct light daily for the darkest foliage color and best blooming. It can tolerate partial shade, but the dramatic, nearly-black leaves may fade to green and flowering will be sparse.
  • Soil: This shrub adapts to a wide range of soil types but thrives in moist, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. If you have heavy clay or sandy soil, amend it with compost or peat moss to improve texture and moisture retention without letting the roots sit in standing water.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply and regularly—about once or twice a week—to help the root system establish itself. Once established, Laced Up® Elderberry is relatively drought-tolerant, though consistent moisture will keep the foliage lush and prevent leaf scorch during hot dry spells.

Pruning Tips

This elderberry blooms on old wood, so pruning is generally minimal and best done immediately after flowering in early summer. If you need to shape the plant or remove dead wood, do so carefully to avoid cutting off next year's flower buds, treating it more like a light cleanup than a hard prune.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins to support healthy foliage and blooms. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the season, as they can push tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before winter frost.

Description

Some things are destined to become classics - The Pontiac Trans-Am, circa 1970; the "little black dress"; The Wizard of Oz. We're not overstating it to say that we firmly believe the Laced Up® Elderberry PP29,051 (Sambucus nigra 'SNR1292') from Proven Winners® ColorChoice® will soon be added to that list!

This new form of strait-laced Elderberry takes everything you've loved about the airy, joyful, award-winning Proven Winners® Black Lace® and Black Beauty® Elderberries and creates a columnar accent better suited to modern urban gardens and small-space landscaping!

By nature, Elderberries are exuberant growers, often becoming very large plants. Unfortunately, if you love them, but also love the current trend of small spaces, you were out of luck.

Until now!

New for 2018, Laced Up® is a more columnar form of European Sambucus that is perfect for smaller spaces. It doesn't take up much space as it shoots up into a fluffy column of gorgeous dark, feathery foliage that adds motion and texture!

Just like its larger cousins, Laced Up® has foamy flat-topped pink blossoms that are fantastic landing pads for pollinators and beneficial insects alike! These summer flower clusters later become sought-after glossy black berries that birds and humans love!

If you plant a Sambucus nigra pollinator partner nearby you'll also get loads of the namesake Elderberries following the flowers. Full of vitamins and medicinal qualities, cook the berries with sweetener to make fabulous wine and tasty syrups, flavoring, and preserves. But because birds and wildlife rely on these juicy dark little berries, plant a couple of these shrubs so everyone can partake!

Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 7, this dark foliage shrub adds depth and dimension while not sacrificing space, growing just 4-6 feet wide but 6-10 feet in height! You can easily 'limb up' this selection to create a unique multi-trunked tree form by exposing the lower trunks!

Planting and Application:

Planting this upscale and colorful Elderberry is also a sneaky way to include Edible Landscaping in your front yard foundation plantings! Try pairing Laced Up® as corner accents and astride your front steps, with Black Lace® along the front of your home! Plant a matching hedge along the front of your yard to screen from the street. The dark foliage is sure to slow traffic!

Consider this plant as a living sculpture! Laced Up® looks amazing in a container or flanking an entryway in a high-style urn, letting you know that the pathway you are about to enter holds something special beyond. A single specimen in a large planter makes a fantastic and quirky statement as a specimen plant in a garden bed or around a sunny patio!

The lush, ferny dark foliage beckons, and the fresh lemony scent of the wide clusters of tiny, precious, fragrant pink flowers enchant you and your guests, while the berries in the summer bring in the songbirds! They'll behave as a perfectly chic flowering and fruiting backdrop to so many other plants! The outstanding, wispy texture of the deep leaves makes everything else 'pop' that is planted before it!

Use several of these narrow-growing plants in a curving row to effortlessly create a marvelously organic flowering hedge around your patio. It provides an airy sense of privacy and elevates the look of your space or creates a private outdoor garden room. You'll beautifully extend the height and improve the looks of any landscape fence.

For a sheared or natural hedge, plant them 4 - 5 feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. If you want to show off individual plants, give them 3-4 feet apart for some wiggle room. Use several across your property line for privacy and to hide a nosy neighbor while feeding and sheltering birds!

  • Dramatic Dark Foliage Color
  • Unmatched Lacy Fine-Cut Leaf Texture
  • Head-Turning Soft Pink Summer Flowers
  • Black, Glossy Edible Fall Berries
  • Columnar Form - Uses Less Space
  • Wonderful Specimens Mass Planting, Hedges & Dramatic Landscape Color!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant it in full sun for the best color and vigor! Plant your shrub in a location that is well-drained and give it regular water. These shrubs do best with a thick layer of mulch for consistent surface moisture and to keep the root system cool in the heat of the summer. Apply 3 to 4 inches of an acidic mulch out 4 feet from the center of the plant. Feed with Acid-Lovers Fertilizer.

Remember that flowering occurs on last year's wood, so if you want fruit, you should not prune Elderberry until after they flower. But this forgiving deciduous shrub is complimented by hard pruning. You can also renewal prune Elderberry to keep the vigorous younger shoots returning by removing the oldest, fattest stems every 3 years. This way you will not have to miss a moment of those flowers or fruit!

  • Grows in Full Sun or Partial Shade
  • Highly Adaptable to Any Well-Drained Soil Type
  • Thrives In Moist to Dry Conditions Once Established
  • Flowers On Old Wood - Prune After Flowering - Can Be Tightly Pruned
  • Very Easy Care & Fast-Growing!

Need a space-saving Elderberry that stands up and commands attention? Order the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Laced Up® Elderberry bush from Nature Hills Nursery! Don't miss this opportunity to be the trendsetter in your neighborhood!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mature height and width of Laced Up® Elderberry?

  • Laced Up® Elderberry reaches 6-10 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide at maturity. This columnar form is specifically bred for smaller spaces while maintaining the classic elderberry characteristics. You can also limb it up to create a multi-trunked tree form if desired.

What are the sunlight requirements for Laced Up® Elderberry?

  • Laced Up® Elderberry thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions. Like other Sambucus varieties, it produces the best flowering and fruiting with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Shop at Nature Hills for this space-saving columnar elderberry.

Is Laced Up® Elderberry drought tolerant once established?

  • Laced Up® Elderberry has moderate drought tolerance once established, though it performs best with consistent moisture. This columnar shrub (zones 4-7) will need regular watering its first year to develop a strong root system. Mulch around the base and water deeply during extended dry periods for optimal berry production.

Does Laced Up® Elderberry require pruning, and when?

  • Laced Up® Elderberry benefits from annual pruning to maintain its columnar shape and encourage flowering. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins, removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. You can also selectively prune older canes to promote vigorous new growth and berry production.

Will Laced Up® Elderberry produce berries, and does it need a pollinator?

  • Laced Up® Elderberry produces glossy black berries after its pink summer blooms. For best berry production, plant a Sambucus nigra pollinator partner nearby. Plant multiple shrubs so both birds and humans can enjoy the vitamin-rich harvest for syrups and preserves, available at naturehills.com.

Is Laced Up® Elderberry deer resistant or rabbit resistant?

  • Laced Up® Elderberry is generally deer resistant, as most elderberry varieties are avoided by deer due to their strong scent and taste. Rabbits may nibble young shoots but typically leave established plants alone. For added protection in high-pressure areas, consider companion planting with other deer-resistant shrubs.

Can Laced Up® Elderberry be planted in containers or small spaces?

  • Laced Up® Elderberry is specifically designed for small spaces and containers, growing just 4-6 feet wide in a columnar form. This compact European Sambucus thrives in USDA zones 4-7 and reaches 6-10 feet tall without spreading. Plant in well-draining soil and provide adequate space for vertical growth.

How is Laced Up® Elderberry shipped, and is it bare root or potted?

  • Laced Up® Elderberry ships as a potted plant, not bare root, ensuring better transplant success. This allows you to plant it throughout the growing season in zones 4-7. Plant in spring after frost danger passes for best establishment.

Does Laced Up® Elderberry need fertilizer, and when?

  • Laced Up® Elderberry benefits from annual spring fertilization with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Apply in early spring before new growth begins in zones 4-7. A second light feeding in early summer supports flower and berry production.

Is Laced Up® Elderberry suitable for clay soil or wet areas?

  • Elderberries naturally thrive in moist to wet soils and tolerate clay conditions well. Laced Up® shares this adaptability, making it excellent for rain gardens and areas with poor drainage in zones 4-7. Plant it where water tends to collect for best results.
