Amethyst Falls - Waterfall of Purple, Now In Tree Form

The Amethyst Falls (Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls') is a North American native Wisteria with long dangling fragrant purple blossoms! Featuring the classic look that you love in the stunning Chinese Wisteria, but is non-invasive! It won't take over your garden and won't spread to the neighbor's yard.

Few plants have a more romantic aura than Wisteria! The bare branches cover themselves in long panicles of violet-purple in the spring before the leaves appear. The dangling blossoms conjure images of Southern Belles strolling in moss-draped gardens! Or fairytale creatures playing in Wisteria-festooned pergolas.

Each fragrant flower is a masterpiece and becomes a clarion call for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds! Trim the blooms for cut flower arrangements inside or float in shallow bowls on your dining table. Trimming encourages a rebloom later in the season.

Hardy throughout USDA hardiness zones 5-9, these flowering trees are fast-growing! Wisteria Vines are expertly trained on a straight sturdy trunk with a canopy of exotic-looking greenery exploding from the top! This Wisteria tree form appears to pour out of the central trunk like a shimmering fountain every year!

Landscape Application:

It will be difficult to find just one place to plant Amethyst Falls in your garden - but you will want to choose a site where everyone can see it! It makes a one-of-a-kind impact on your landscape! Boost curb appeal and make a name for yourself by planting this unique specimen tree in your front yard!

This is the perfect tree to use to set off your berm planting. Use one or more as a perfect touch for your backyard as a conversation piece, or near your patio! Use them as a highlight in your courtyard area. Amethyst Falls makes a striking weeping centerpiece in your garden bed or border.

Go big and include Amethyst Falls Vine as a backdrop and vining accent, hiding eyesores, and even rambling groundcover! These vines are Host Plants for several species of Skipper Butterfly larvae, so this native vine is a must-have for your Pollinator gardens.

Treat yourself to a walk underneath their dripping display of lavender blooms. Include seating nearby to enjoy your Wisteria plant's fragrance. Snip plenty of blooms for your vase bouquets and enjoy the fragrance indoors too!

  • Long, Lavender-Purple Flowers Fade to Blue
  • Deliciously Fragrant!
  • Vigorous, Yet Well-Behaved & Not Invasive
  • Vine Trained Into A Unique Topiary Form
  • Supports Hummingbirds & Butterflies - Host Plant for Skipper Butterflies
  • Dramatic Specimens, Container Accents & Outstanding Landscape Focal Points

#ProPlantTips for Care

This Flowering Vine will need a sturdy support to climb. Plant Wisteria full sun or partial shade (especially in hotter growing zones 5-9), where it will receive at least 5-6 hours of sunlight a day. Wisteria will struggle to bloom in anything less. Your Wisteria requires well-drained soil that won't retain water after rain.

New plants must be watered deeply during their first year or so in the ground, after that, Wisteria tolerates periodic drought. You'll want to use Nature Hills Root Booster during planting for life-long support. A 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch helps cut down on moisture loss.

Blue Chinese Wisteria Tree Pruning

Decide on the style and shape of your tree, and train the branches to grow in the style that suits your tree best. Regular trims to keep things tidy, and flowering beautifully. The goal is to have plenty of short flowering stems for plenty of spring blooms within the crown of your tree.

Decide which structural branches you'll keep and allow them to grow out and thicken up each season.

In late summer, prune for size and reinforce the structure

  • First, remove any shoots that aren't in your training plan.
  • Next, prune back the new growth shoots from your desired branches to about 5 leaf buds on those new stems.

In late winter, it's time for another trim

  • First, trim your tree by removing any unwanted shoots that aren't in your training plan.
  • Remove crisscrossing branches
  • Next, prune back the shoots that you worked on last summer. Shortening them to 3 to 5 flower buds on each shoot.

For the first year or two, you'll want to use a sturdy stake to help your young tree stand up straight. You'll leave that stake until the main trunk is wide enough to support the whole plant by itself.

Just add our Arbor Springs kit to your cart and keep it easy for yourself.

  • Easy to Grow & Thrives In Full Sun
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Rich Well-Drained Soil
  • Prune After Flowering
  • Disease-Resistant & Drought-Tolerant
