Butterfly Favorite

Want your garden to buzz with bees, butterflies and birds? The Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata) will help boost your garden's positive impact on your ecosystem.

The rustic, but bold, blue-lavender flowers are sure to add a bit of romance and elegance to your garden as they sway in the breeze. The Blue Vervain produces dramatic elongated spikes of petite flowers during the late summer which will last for weeks.

These native, biennial flowers are perfect for adding a bit of blue or lavender to a wildflower bouquet or dry them out for a homemade wreath.

Plant a few in your butterfly garden to add variety of color and tasty nectar for your winged guests. And this plant will encourage many species to stop by your garden for a snack or shade. The Blue Vervain appeals to pollinators like epoline cuckoo bees, halictid bees, eucerine miner bees, and the verbena bee (a rare and specialist pollinator). This plant is also a favorite meal for caterpillars of the verbena moth.

Feathered creatures also love this plant! The cardinal, field sparrow, swamp sparrow, and slate-colored junco make a meal of the Blue Vervain's seeds. So, if you're quiet, you can snap some great photos of the butterflies, bees and birds that love this plant!

Be sure to plant it in moist soil for best performance. It prefers full or partial sun and would add height to a field of wildflowers or among other garden flowers. This hardy plant will even add a pop of purple to your ditches, help prevent bank erosion, or stabilize pond edges.

Prune the seed heads to help the Blue Vervain branch out and become bushier. And to help keep the self-seeding under control, you can deadhead the buds once they begin to dry out. This plant is known for its active self-seeding abilities. In some locations, this native plant actually spreads and seeds "too well." But when you order live plants from Nature Hills, you don't have to worry, we use Plant Sentry™ to follow all local, state and federal regulations for plants that can become invasive in your area.
