Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Size | Actual Volume | Metric Equivalent |
---|---|---|
2" x 2" x 3" | 0.18 - 0.21 dry quarts | 0.20 - 0.23 dry liters |

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

The bar is set high when you design for a small landscape. Each plant must be carefully considered, and there are several criteria to evaluate.
Vet your choices for excellent color, form, texture, ease of maintenance...and that certain. . ."je ne sais quoi". Call it fun, or unique charm, if you'd like.
You're sure to love the highly desirable Fuzzball™ Siberian Carpet Cypress (Microbiota decussata 'Condavis' PP #20,012). It's a perfectly poised funny little fellow.
Grow it in sunshine, or in a spot that only gets about four hours of light a day. This rare evergreen grows into a beautifully elegant vase shape, even in partial shade.
Bright green foliage resembles an extremely finely serrated fern. This fuzzy texture is what turns a nice plant into a must-have.
Picture it this way.
Fuzzball is like a Fern that stays evergreen. It's a groundcover that is just as durable as a Juniper...for partial shade. And with a chocolate-purple fall color, Fuzzball is an evergreen that dazzles all year-long.
It takes the cold, but becomes waterwise after it is established in your soil. You'll literally never need to prune it, unless you want to use some of the greenery in a cut flower bouquet.
Add structure, engaging texture and color with this low-maintenance variety of Carpet Cypress. Grow it in the ground, or use it in exterior containers.
Nature Hills is excited to offer this delightful compact evergreen. Place your order for Fuzzball Siberian Carpet Cypress as soon as you see it in stock.
We'll sell out quickly.
How to Use Fuzzball™ Siberian Carpet Cypress in the Landscape
Play with the incredible texture of these fascinating evergreen plants. Use them with wildly contrasting partners, from the huge leaves of Empress Wu Hosta in a shaded area to the spiky Adam's Needle Yucca in the sun.
Fuzzball makes a very useful groundcover. Fill an ugly, barren area with rich, cool green tones; then kick back and relax.
You'll love the modern look!
For a solid fill, plant them twelve inches apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next. Use mulch between plants, but pull it back to avoid touching the stems.
Kids are drawn to this plant, too. Try them in a Children's Garden with silvery, scented Lavender and Silver Carpet Lamb's Ear.
Add them to a naturalized border for a nearly "hands off" landscape. Plant Upright Red Chokeberry, then Little Henry Sweetspire and run several Fuzzballs along the edge. They'll spread to fill the spot with color and relaxed style.
Add Fuzzball to large outdoor containers as a standalone "Thriller". Raising them up amplifies the incredible impact of that outstanding texture.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Fuzzball does fine in full sun, and can tolerate partial shade, too. Give it at least four hours of sunlight a day.
Siberian Carpet Cypress must have well-drained soils that don't retain water for long. Use them in containers or create raised planting beds if you have marshy soil that stays wet a long time.
The first year, give your plants a medium amount of water on a regular basis. Continue this for container plants.
In-ground plants become waterwise after the roots are established in your soil. However, we like to encourage supplemental water during extended drought.
It's very rare that you'll need to prune these compact plants. It's fine to snip a frond or two to use as green fill in your bouquets.
Apply deer repellent spray on planting day, if you live in an area that has heavy deer pressure. After all, deer are both hungry and curious. Reapply as directed by the label.
