When selecting Tulips, choose the type, size, and colors that work best for you! After all, there are about 3,000 varieties of Tulips available!

Ever since 'Tulip Mania' in the early 1600s, when Tulip bulbs were as prized and as expensive as diamonds, we’ve been in love with these spring delights!

Easy to grow from perennial bulbs, Tulips are in the Lily Family and represent rebirth and new beginnings, as well as a traditional flower for the 11th Anniversary. Many types have silky petals that are fragrant and sought after by bees and florists alike!

There are many types of Tulip Plants

  • Darwin and Darwin Hybrids
  • Single and Double (Peony Type) Tulips
  • Parrot Tulips
  • Fringed Tulips
  • Kaufmanniana Tulips
  • Triumph Tulips
  • Early and Late
  • Fosteriana Tulips
  • Greigii Tulips
  • Lily-Flowered Tulips
  • Viridiflora Tulips
  • Botanical or Wild Tulips

Featuring a rosette of wide, soft green to blue-green paddle-like pointed foliage and strong stems. Carefree and fast-growing, these bulbs can range between early to late spring flowering and are all considered fall-planted bulbs.

How To Use Tulips In Your Garden

Whether you plant your Tulips in a flower garden, around borders, or in thick clusters by an entryway, you can expect a fabulous array of colors in the spring!

Both in containers indoors as forced bulbs, or outdoors in pots and planters, Tulips are space-saving lovelies that will bring joy and beauty to your world!

Plant one or a hundred, and you’ll achieve a brilliant display that practically cares for itself in mild winters, and holds its own in chilly climates! Mix into perennial and Cottage gardens, plant among your early spring cut flower borders and pollinator gardens, or just plant rows with other perennial bulbs among shrubs and the fronts of landscape hedges for a pop of color each year. You’ll love having them lining your driveway or paths with their cheerful faces each spring.

Caring For Tulip Bulbs

Get your new fall-planted bulbs off on the right foot with these simple tips, planting advice in our #ProPlantTips, and with Nature Hills Root Booster!

  • Provide a full sun or part sun location
  • These bulbs do best in well-drained soil
  • Create raised gardens or berms if you have poor drainage
  • Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch over the root system
  • Prune back foliage after it turns yellow
  • Water new plants regularly using the Finger Test to help them get established or until the ground freezes

Once the foliage yellows in the summer or fall, you can then prune it to the ground. It’s important to wait until the Tulips are finished blooming, to remove the spent flower and stem unless you want them to naturalize and go to seed. But keep the leaves because they are making food for the bulb to prepare for next year’s flowers.

How To Plant Tulips

These are fall-planted bulbs that need to be planted in the fall before a hard frost. Nature Hills takes your order and holds these bulbs until the proper planting time for your growing zone.

Plant in the fall 6 to 8 weeks before a hard freeze. Each bulb is put in a hole with the pointy end upward and at least 8 inches deep. Add bulb fertilizer and water in very well. Apply mulch over the soil surface for insulation and moisture retention throughout the year.

The location should be well-drained and in full to partial sun. Tulips do not like continuously wet soil so water only if it gets very dry in the fall.

For early flowering indoors, Tulips can be forced to bloom in containers, but this takes patience! Place in a dark cold area until roots start to develop; this takes about 10 weeks. When the shoots are about an inch tall, transfer the pot gradually to more light and heat (not too warm, however); water sparingly. Once they are finished blooming, they can be transplanted outdoors and will recover to bloom again next year.
