The Northwind Switch Grass (Panicum virgatum 'Northwind'), is a very upright and erect growing warm-season Ornamental Grass, known for its tolerance for heavy snow load. A wonderful textural and structural element for your landscape!

The strong, upright growing blades are a solid, deep-green during the growing season, before turning golden in the fall. Holding this fall color through the winter! Easy care and very low maintenance, this grass sways and rustles in the breeze, offering sensory elements to the garden!

The tall, delicate inflorescences are golden-yellow and rise gracefully above the foliage during autumn, persisting all winter to offer four-season interest! You'll love the swaying, airy motion these lend to the garden atmosphere!

Planting and Application:

Northwind is an excellent background plant, providing structure, motion, privacy and texture to the garden and landscape! It is quite handsome when used in groups or as an accent plant. Coastal gardens and formal gardens both benefit from this tough grass! Mixing and mingling well with all colors, they add grace, color, plus texture year-round!

Since this grass tolerates wet soils, it is a fine choice for water gardens or along stream banks, water features and rain gardens or where the gutters drain. Deer avoid this water-wise plant so it's great for en masse in out-of-the-way areas. Ornamental grasses are amazing in the perennial and butterfly gardens, or with prairie natives and Xeriscaping, plus it provides excellent cover and food for wildlife.

  • Deep-Green Ornamental Grass
  • 6-Foot Tall Upright Form
  • Foliage and Flowers Turn Golden in Autumn
  • Dense, Upright Selection of a Native
  • Winter Interest, Sound, Color, Texture, Motion!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Northwind is spreading, easy-care, versatile and tolerant of a wide range of soil and climatic conditions and is an improved form of the native. Hardy USDA zones 3-9, it's a warm-season perennial grass, so don't be alarmed if it's not growing in early spring. Switch Grass loves moist, well-draining, fertile soil. However, it also tolerates sand, dry soils and slopes, and boggy areas. Even doing well in clay conditions, alkalinity, occasional drought, moderate salinity, and incidental seasonal flooding!

  • Full Sun & Part Shade
  • Moist to Dry (Once Established) Well-Drained Soil
  • Easy To Grow - Incredibly Versatile & Adaptable
  • Deer-Resistant
  • Warm-Season Grass Variety
  • Tolerates Snow Load

Good packaging / Transportation

The plants arrived in sturdy packing with the roots moist. Planted and surrounded by mulch. Waiting until spring 2020 for final review (to see if they survive the winter).

Dear William,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! We're glad to hear the plants arrived securely with moist roots – that packaging is designed precisely to keep your new additions safe and healthy during transit. It sounds like you’re off to a great start by planting and mulching them; that will definitely help protect the roots over winter.

As you wait for spring, we recommend keeping the mulch layer fresh and somewhat moderate in thickness to insulate roots without retaining excess moisture that can lead to rot. If cold snaps get severe, a light cover, such as burlap, can offer extra protection. Feel free to check our online care guides anytime for tips customized to your plant varieties—they can be a big help during the colder months.

We look forward to hearing how your plants thrive next season and are here to support you along the way.

Rooting for your garden’s success,
