Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give your Chandler strawberries at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun daily. While they can handle very light afternoon shade in hotter climates, maximum sun exposure ensures the highest sugar content and the deepest red color in your berries.
  • Soil: These plants prefer loose, loamy soil that drains like a well wrung sponge. If you have heavy clay, plant them in raised beds or incorporate organic compost to prevent "wet feet," which can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, keep the soil consistently moist by providing about 1 inch of water per week to help the root system take hold. Once established, you can let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings, but remember that inconsistent moisture during fruit development often results in smaller, misshapen berries. Aim for the base of the plant rather than the leaves to keep the foliage dry and reduce the risk of fungal issues.

Pruning Tips

Since strawberries produce "runners" or daughter plants, you should pinch off the first round of blossoms in the first year to redirect energy into building a massive root system. Think of it like an investment that pays out in a much larger harvest the following year. For established plants, prune away the runners once the main plant has filled its allotted space to prevent the bed from becoming overcrowded and choked for nutrients.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer in early spring as new growth appears and again after the final harvest of the season. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall, as this encourages tender new growth that can be easily killed by the first hard frost. A light organic mulch or straw layer around the base will also help provide a slow release of nutrients while keeping the fruit off the bare dirt.

These lovely Strawberry plants look adorable draped over container edges! Plus they make a fine groundcover for your landscaping and can be used as more than just a fruit plant in the vegetable and kitchen garden. #ProPlantTips for Care:

Strawberry plants fruit the best in full sun locations that have enriched, well-drained soil. Provide regular yet moderate amounts of moisture and a 3-4 inch deep layer of compost and/or mulch with regular fertility.

Arrange runners around the parent plants evenly to give them the most wiggle room and transplant rooted runners into gaps to fill in the area fully. Rake through or trim back plants after the foliage has yellowed or in the early spring before new growth emerges. Highly disease-resistant, Chandler is sure to please without any of the fuss!

  • Full Sun For The Most Fruit
  • Well-Drained Enriched Soil
  • Regular Moisture Needs
  • Disease-Resistant & Heat/Humidity Hardy
  • Prune/Clean Mounds Early Spring
