How do I prune my Roses?

Prune Rose plants in the early spring, before you see new growth. There are many benefits to pruning. Pruning tips include:

  • Remove dead and diseased wood. Prune canes at a 45-degree angle.
  • Improve air circulation and sunlight reaching the interior of the plant.
  • Encourage fresh growth with vigorous flowering canes.
  • Remove old canes at the crown.
  • Cut younger canes back to about 6 to 8 inches above the crown.
    • For Climbing Roses: Cut flowering canes back by one-third or one-half.
    • For smaller roses and miniature bushes: Cut back to 2 to 4 inches.

What is the difference between a Bush Rose and a Shrub Rose?

The terms Rose bush, Rosebush, and Rose shrub are sometimes used interchangeably, although they are technically two different things. An actual Landscaping Shrub Rose is a vigorously growing plant that is larger and not as tidy in form as a Bush Rose. Heirloom Roses and old-fashioned varieties usually fall into the Shrub Rose category.

Whatever type of Roses you admire, they’re apt to be waiting for you in the selection of Roses for sale at Nature Hills Nursery. Place your order today.

FAQ's for Buying Roses Online

What are the best conditions for growing rose bushes?

Roses thrive in full sun with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. They prefer rich, organic, well-drained soil and consistent moisture. Proper spacing for airflow is essential to reduce disease risk. Choose a sunny location with good drainage to help your rose bushes flourish.

What is the difference between bush roses and shrub roses?

Bush roses typically refer to more compact, tidy rose varieties, such as hybrid teas or floribundas, while shrub roses are larger, more vigorous growers. Shrub roses often include old-fashioned and heirloom types that offer a more informal, spreading shape and excellent disease resistance.

When and how should I prune rose bushes?

Prune roses in early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead or diseased canes, trim back weak stems, and shape the plant to improve air circulation. For hybrid teas, cut canes to 6–8 inches; for climbers, prune after blooming; for miniatures, trim to 2–4 inches above the crown.

What are the different types of roses available at Nature Hills Nursery?

Nature Hills offers a wide variety of roses including Floribunda Roses, Climbing Roses, Grandiflora Roses, Rugosa Roses, and highly fragrant varieties. Each type offers unique qualities, from abundant blooms and vigorous growth to classic form and strong scent.

Can I grow roses in my region?

Yes, Nature Hills Nursery provides a zone finder tool so you can shop for roses suited to your USDA hardiness zone. Simply enter your zip code on the product page to see if a rose is compatible with your climate. We only ship when it’s the right time to plant in your area.
