Need a broadleaf evergreen that turns purple in the fall and grows anywhere? The Purple Wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei 'Coloratus') is a dense, woody-stemmed, broadleaf evergreen vine that can be grown in a variety of forms!

Pretty greenish-white blossoms appear in the spring and bring in the bees and butterflies! Featuring lustrous, ovate to elliptic, dark green leaves (1-2" long) which transform into an incredible reddish and dark purple hue in fall and hold through the winter!

Cold hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 through 8, these Euonymus grow just 6 to 9 inches tall but can spread into 12 - 36 inch wide mats that suppress weeds and fill sunny to partly sunny areas fast! In some areas, Wintercreeper can sometimes be invasive because the birds spread the seeds. Nature Hills has developed Plant Sentry™, our very own compliance software that will not allow the sale or shipment of any plant that your state has prohibited from being purchased and grown where it is restricted.

Planting and Application:

If allowed to climb a wall, tree, or other structure, Wintercreeper assumes a more vine-like characteristic! It is one of the most popular evergreen groundcovers available today. This plant is a good ground cover for slopes, slowing rainwater and erosion, covering large areas quickly, and adding year-round fill!

Wintercreeper is also used for container plantings and tumbling over the edges of platers and retaining walls. Rambling happily throughout the garden, and filling voids and bare ground as living mulch. Just keep an eye on the growth as it can intertwine itself into larger shrubs or cover smaller plants when not minded at least once a year.

Wintercreeper Euonymus, is primarily a trailing groundcover form, spreading by rooting stems as a sprawling, tangled, bushy mat. It is similar in habit to English Ivy, in that it spreads along the ground, rooting as it goes, until it reaches a vertical surface which it then begins to climb. Let Wintercreeper ramble up rock walls, bare concrete foundations, and wood trellis.

  • Greenish White Blooms For Pollinators
  • Glossy Dark Green Leaves
  • Incredible Reddish-Purple Broad-Leaf Evergreen Foliage
  • Fast, Low-Growing Growth
  • Fantastic En Masse, Groundcover, Container Filler & Erosion Control

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant this absolute beauty in full sun or partial shade, in rich, well-drained soil for the best growth possible! Wintercreeper isn't too picky about urban settings either. It'll thrive even in those rather polluted inner-city environments.

If you'd like, consider adding a layer of mulch around your plant starting about one inch away from the base. Not only does this add to the overall aesthetic of your garden, but it'll also help shield the roots from the worst of the heat and conserve water!

Should you like to give your Wintercreeper a little trim, we recommend Pruning in the early spring, before the growing season begins. Just grab your favorite pair of sharp shears and prune them where needed.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Rich Well-Drained Soil
  • Appreciates Mulch & Moist Soil
  • Prune Early Spring
  • Train as a Low Bush, Groundcover, or Climbing Vine!

Year-round color and fantastic purple fall foliage, the Purple Wintercreeper is an incredibly versatile evergreen that can be a spiller, filler, or vertical thriller! Order yours today at Nature Hills!
