Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 3-9
Splash out on your shade garden this year with the reliable and noteworthy, Raspberry Splash Lungwort (Pulmonaria 'Raspberry Splash')! Also known as Bethlehem Sage, this is an underused perennial valued for its foliage even more than it is for its flowers!
Each lance-shaped, green leaf features heavily silvery-hued splashes coupled with a delightfully fuzzy texture! Short stems shoot above the foliage in spring, supporting dramatic clusters of nodding, funnel-shaped blossoms.
The gorgeous blooms are clothed in tantalizing shades of raspberry, coral, purple and pink (depending upon their state of maturity), but culminate in fuchsia/raspberry tones! Bumblebees, native bees, and other buzzing pollinators adore these blooms! Even a curious Hummingbird or two will hum by to sip their ample mid-late spring bloom time!
With their spear-like spotted leaves, Pulmonaria Lungworts, was once thought to symbolize diseased lungs and used to treat pulmonary infections. Those times are past, and it has now become beloved for its spotted foliage (and other decorative features).
Your Raspberry Splash Pulmonaria is a space-saving perennial that will grow up to 12 inches in height with an 18 - 23-inch spread. It is disease and pest-resistant and quite easy to grow throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9. Even deer seem to avoid this plant!
Planting and Application:
Raspberry Splash has a mounding nature and does well as an edging plant or planted en masses in a shady spot of your yard! Let politely spread into groundcovering clumps throughout the Cottage garden, in perennial borders, or fill Pollinator and Cut Flower gardens in double-duty spring blooms! Their underground rhizomes create small colonies that act as living mulch to help keep other plants cool and their bare, leggy stems covered!
Raspberry Splash also makes quite the colorful "splash" in containers when placed with contrasting plantings like Spellbound Coral Bells, Winter Glow Bergenia, and Burgundy Lace Lady Ferns! Even in the woodland garden and dappled shade understory, Lungworts play nicely with Pink Chablis Lamium and Berry Smoothie Coral Bells! Mix with Delft Lace Astilbe or go bold by pairing it with a Chocolate Shogun Astilbe!
Add to your shady banks, slopes, beds and borders as edging, or let Lungworts flow along the edges of a Rain garden or pathways sides as a pretty row! Just plant this snazzy beauty in a cool, shady area in your yard and watch them dance!
- Dramatic Fuchsia/Raspberry Pink Tubular Flower Clusters
- Decorative Fuzzy Green & Silver-Speckled Pointed Foliage
- Spring Flowers Attract Hummingbirds & Bees
- Upright Clump - Politely Spreading Mounds
- Woodland, Shade Gardens, Borders, Edging & Container Gems
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Raspberry Splash is a full-shade to part-shade lover and will thrive in organically rich, moist and well-drained soils. Lungwort does not tolerate dry soils so be sure to add a 3-4 inch layer of mulch to your planting beds and water these herbaceous perennials regularly in the heat and during drought!
Deadhead after the flowers are finished blooming, removing the flowering stems completely to maintain a tidy mound and the plant transforms itself into an incredible foliage plant with silvery spotted leaves! Otherwise, Lungwort are low-maintenance gems! In the fall, after the foliage has died down after frost, prune the entire plant to the ground and remove all stems, leaves, and other debris to prevent mildews, slugs, and snails from overwintering. To prevent over-crowding, divide your clumps every 3-5 years in the autumn as well.
- Full Shade to Partial Sun/Shade
- Moist Rich Well-Drained Soil
- Appreciates Regular Water & Mulched Beds
- Deadhead After Bloom & Prune Late Fall
- Deer & Rabbits Seldom Bother Them
