Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Crave delectably dark color that easily turns your landscape into a showpiece? This showy selection is perfect for beginning gardeners. It also works perfectly for those of us who are too busy (or smart!) to fuss with demanding landscape plants.
A fabulous cultivar of native Ninebark, Summer Wine® Black (Physocarpus opulifolius 'SMNPMS' PP# 30,232) offers some of the deepest, boldest color available on the market.
It's very easy to grow, as well! With a compact, naturally arched form, Summer Wine® Black looks incredible all year-long.
Don't you love it when you find a plant that really doesn't need any fuss to look its best all the time?
Proven Winners® team selected this variety for its lush pigment and high performance. They were also impressed at the incredible snowy-white bloom clusters.
These blooms lavishly cover the tips of the branches in springtime. Get ready for the compliments of this contrasting, classy choice.
Snip them for elegant flower arrangement! Don't forget to add the dramatic foliage, as well.
You'll love the rich depth of color delivered by the gorgeous foliage all season. Summer Wine® Black is truly Blackberry-level purple; and it turns heads while holding true into autumn.
Once those cooler nights come on in fall, the leaves burnish into a lovely red-purple for a brilliant display. In wintertime, you'll even have some interest from the famous exfoliating "Ninebark".
Perhaps best of all is the ease of care. Ninebarks are already easy shrubs, and this cultivar is one of the best. Give it plenty of room, and you'll need only prune to renew, never to shape.

How to Use Summer Wine® Black Ninebark in the Landscape
These amazing shrubs make the perfect specimen. Use one at the corner of your home, or a pair flanking either side of your outdoor kitchen.
Easy-breezy care, coupled with astonishingly dark foliage and pristine blooms? Use them in your mixed borders, as well.
They make a memorable backdrop for sunny-yellow Groundcover Roses, Daylilies or Black-Eyed Susans. Let them become a dark curtain for an all-white Moon Garden.
Plant them in the ground, or pop them in huge outdoor containers for a fun look. March them along your pool deck or patio for a near-tropical feeling.
Style them anyway you'd like! This shrub can handle a "lot of look" and compliments urban or rustic properties equally as well.
Summer Wine® Black Ninebark is cloaked in saturated foliage all the way to the ground. These shrubs make an excellent privacy screen wherever you need it.
Plant a hedge to shield your patio seating. Try several to block your child's play structure from the street view. Grow them in a pot on your balcony to create a blissfully secure escape.
Plant four feet apart on center to create a solid screen. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Ninebark needs full sun for the darkest color. Provide at least six hours of direct sunlight.
Ensure their planting soil drains quickly after rain. Otherwise, you'll want to plant them in a raised bed.
If you'll keep them in containers, we recommend that you drill additional drainage holes in your container. Elevate it with bricks or clay feet and avoid placing a saucer underneath.
Water Summer Wine® Black Ninebark carefully during its first season. Container-grown plants need supplemental water always. In-ground plants need supplemental water in times of drought.
Prune, if needed, right after the flowers are faded and dried. Don't delay, or you'll risk cutting off the blooms for next year.
Conduct periodic renewal pruning every few years to keep your shrub flowering well. Remove the thickest, oldest stems at ground level and leave young, thin stems in place.
Get deep, rich, mysterious color all season without having to lift a finger. Order your Summer Wine® Black Ninebark today!
