There's no doubt that if Sir Peter Paul Rubens ever laid eyes on the Rubenesque Tall Bearded Iris (Iris germanica 'Rubenesque'), he would spontaneously begin painting its dynamic and exaggerated flower form! Fragrant and with a warm glow, this painter's masterpiece can now extend its luxurious beauty to your sun garden!

It's easy to see how the Rubenesque Iris earned its name. With ruffles to spare and a peachy flesh tone that can only be described as "a painterly delight", the Rubenesque Iris resembles the voluptuous and unabashed women in Rubens' paintings. This Iris has large blooms with delicate orangey-apricot standards, glowing tan falls, and popping tangerine beards. All of these colors blend seamlessly, creating a garden masterpiece.

These Tall Bearded Irises truly define "tall"! They soar over others when they're ready to bloom in mid or late spring, at 42 inches and the sword-like foliage forms clumps that spread to a space-saving 12 - 18 inches wide. Deer, rabbits, and even squirrels rarely eat these plants or their rhizomes.

Planting and Application:

Rubenesque attracts an audience of bees and butterflies, beckoning them to these classical ruffled blooms! It's no wonder Iris enthusiasts love these as an ideal back border to add romance to their Cottage gardens and an artist's touch to their mixed perennial borders! Gain a vertical element as a backdrop, the sword-like greenery bringing structure all growing season, long after the flowers fade! They are also a sight for sore eyes when used as cut flowers!

Its sun tolerance and low maintenance adaptability allow these tough perennials to thrive when planted in a Rock garden, in en masse drifts, or in groupings beside hardscapes. Line the front of your foundation hedge, or the foundation itself in a row of these showy blooms that highlight your brick masonry! The hue also blends in with other ochres, oranges, golds, and cream, while off-setting blues, reds, and purples!

The luscious warm hue brings life to mixed planters as a thriller and vertical element while standing out strong in a terracotta pot as a primary specimen planting on your porch and patio containers, or around your poolside seating areas and balconies!

  • Exaggerated Blooms - Lovely Peachy, & Tan Coloration With Ruffled Petals
  • Taller Than Most Tall Bearded Irises!
  • Attracts Pollinators & Gorgeous Cut Flowers
  • Warm Vibrant Scented Container Specimen!
  • Vertical Backdrops, Edging, Facer Plants, Accents & Massed Specimens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

You don't have to be a master gardener to cultivate these brilliant blooms! They're easy to grow for the most novice gardener to the brownest thumb! Tall Bearded Irises require partial afternoon shade or full sun and fast-draining soil. The perennial rhizomes despise soggy soil but appreciate moderate amounts of water when young and a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch over their root zone. Deadhead when the blooms are done but keep the leaves so they can make food for the bulb. As the years pass, you will want to divide and transplant the new Iris rhizomes every few years depending on how closely they're planted together.

Information About Bareroot Iris

Bareroot Iris are shipped as nice fresh-cut divisions with two to three fans of green tops. Keep in mind each Iris variety can have slightly different-sized roots. Container plants are well-grown in the nursery for several years in their container to establish a strong root system. This low-maintenance perennial does best when planted in fall.

When planting Iris, set them up for success by planting with the roots pointed downward and the top third of its rhizome exposed. Note, it's best to cover the rhizome with a thin layer of mulch, compost, or leaves to protect it during the coldest months but make sure to uncover it in the spring.

  • Full Sun & Some Shade
  • Easy Care & Low Maintenance In Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Needs

  • Deer, Rabbit & Squirrel Seldom Bother These Perennials
