Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes

Bright and glossy, Hollies are the queens of the fruiting shrub world when ranked by ornamental value, and Magical® Daydream Winterberry Holly is no exception! Magical® Daydream Winterberry (Ilex verticilata 'Kolcaroda') is a compact ornamental deciduous shrub with four-season interest! Glossy green leaves take on a coppery-gold fall color for added delight!
Part of the Magical® series of Winterberry Holly Spring brings darling little white blossoms that, while you may not notice them, the pollinators will go ga-ga for! In winter, the heavily laded, fiery orange fruits cluster tightly all over each bare stem! Great for decoration in the garden or in the home for dried holiday décor.
These are female Holly and require a male Winterberry shrub for a pollinator. We recommend the Mr. Poppins, Little Goblin Guy, Jim Dandy, or Southern Gentleman are male Holly that will all work to pollinate up to 10 Magical® Daydreams. However, without a male pollinator, you may not see any fruit set. Magical® Daydream reaches a hefty 6 - 8 feet in height and equal spread throughout USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9.
Planting and Application:
Excellent as a hedge and foundation planting, Magical® Daydream adds year-round curb appeal! Their tolerance for urban conditions makes them great for along the roadside to act as a barrier between your front yard and the road. Winterberry looks lovely as a hedge along a fence to enhance (or hide) the view! Create garden rooms by planting a curved row of these impressive shrubs around a focal point, your garden seating or highlighting your beds and borders!
Anchor your garden beds or soften the edges of a shed, garage, or your home's foundation with year-round interest planted on the corners!
The berries alone in winter make Magical® Daydream a wonderful specimen among your winter landscape shrubs and perennial gardens. So be sure to intersperse among all your garden beds and plantings to inject some fiery color into the bleak winter landscape.
Their tolerance for soggy soils makes them wonderful for along streams and water features. Plant in low areas, Rain Gardens, moist wooded edges, and where your gutters drain! These are wildlife shrubs and attract many beneficial pollinators and songbirds without the worry that deer will stop by for lunch!
