Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Size | Actual Volume | Metric Equivalent |
---|---|---|
2" x 2" x 3" | 0.18 - 0.21 dry quarts | 0.20 - 0.23 dry liters |

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Something new for your herb garden! The Late & Blue Dill (Anethum graveolens 'Late&Blue') is a fantastic new selection of Dill with all the fine-textured airy foliage and aromatic flavor you’d expect, but with a cool blue twist! The foliage is a deep blue-green and really stands out like dark mist among other plants in your garden!
The summer blooms of bright yellow airy flowers are displayed high on the plant and lend delicate finery to garden beds and floral arrangements. The bold yellow flowers really provide a great contrast to the blue foliage!
If you’re lucky, you’ll see a few black, white and yellow striped caterpillars munching on your leaves. If you don’t mind them, you’ll later enjoy cocoons hatching into Black or Giant Swallowtail Butterflies! Just in case, be sure to plant a few extra plants for yourself and your wildlife! Bees and adult butterflies go crazy for the pollen and nectar resources!
Planting and Application:
Edible from flower to root, these are wonderfully versatile plants! If you pickle and can your produce, you are familiar with the dill seeds, the airy foliage, known as Dill weed, adds lots of flavor to a wide variety of dishes, and the roots are edible too! Fresh or dried, the entire plant has something to offer! Tall and narrow growing, they tuck into any container garden, mixed planter or balcony vegetable garden with ease!
Late & Blue isn’t just tasty and aromatic either! It’s a fantastic pollinator garden plant that attracts a host of bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects! Naturals in the cutting and cottage border as well as mixing beautifully among perennials, shrubs, and of course, the kitchen, veggie and herb garden!
- Airy Bright Yellow Flowers
- Blue-Green Dark Lacy Foliage
- Pungent & Flavorful!
- Edible Dried

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Dill plants do best in the full sun and in very well-drained soil. Provide moderate fertility and consistent but low moisture all growing season. When frost threatens your plant, prune to the ground and hang upside down to dry. Deadhead unless you want the seeds, though be cautious, Dill can self-seed freely if you forget!
- Full Sun
- Moderate Moisture & Fertility
- Well-Drained Soil
- Pinch Back for Branching & Deadhead
