Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Little Ben thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily for the sweetest fruit production. While it tolerates partial shade in hotter climates, you will notice a tradeoff in smaller yields and a less intense flavor profile.
  • Soil: This shrub prefers rich, well drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. If you are dealing with heavy clay, mix in organic compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" will quickly lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Little Ben twice a week to ensure the root system anchors deeply. Once established, this dwarf variety is moderately drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during fruit set often leads to berry cracking or premature dropping. Aim for deep soakings at the base of the plant rather than frequent light sprinkles to keep the foliage dry and disease free.

Pruning Tips

Gooseberries fruit best on wood that is two to three years old, so pruning is vital for consistent harvests. In late winter while the plant is dormant, remove any branches older than four years and thin out crowded center stems to allow light and air to reach the middle. Think of it like opening a window; better airflow prevents powdery mildew and makes it much easier to reach past the thorns during picking season.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release granular fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 formula, early in the spring just as new growth begins. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this forces soft, green growth that will not harden off before the first frost. This late season surge leaves the plant vulnerable to winter kill and can invite aphid infestations.
