Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Aim for at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day to maintain the intense burgundy foliage and maximize yellow blooms. While it tolerates partial shade, the leaves will turn more green and flower production will drop significantly without enough light.
  • Soil: This shrub is adaptable and handles rocky, sandy, or heavy clay soils well as long as they drain freely. If you are planting in heavy clay, mix in organic compost to break up the texture and prevent water from pooling around the roots.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water deeply once a week to ensure the root system establishes itself in the new location. Once the plant is settled, it is remarkably drought-tolerant, but consistent moisture produces the best color. If you let it get too dry for too long, the foliage may look dull or droop, signaling it needs a drink.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms on new wood, so the best time to prune is in early spring before new leaves emerge. Trim the overall shape back by about one-third, much like giving the plant a haircut. This timing prevents you from cutting off future flower buds and stimulates vigorous new stems that will carry the season's blooms.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring just as new growth begins to show. Avoid applying high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages tender green growth that won't have time to harden off before winter frosts arrive.

Fireflies in the night sky! The Firefly™ series Nightglow™ Bush Honeysuckle (Diervilla x splendens 'El Madrigal') features dark reddish-purple foliage and yellow blooms! Upright growing and dramatically hued, it's a mix of dark burgundy, bruised purple, and dark red foliage! Creating the perfect backdrop for the tiny, bright sulfur-yellow flowers in the summer, just like Fireflies in the night!

You'll love the way the clusters of star-shaped, bright yellow, trumpet-shaped blooms stand out against the dramatic leaves! The Butterflies, native bees, and Hummingbirds adore your Firefly™ Nightglow™ because it boasts bright yellow flowers in early summer! Then in autumn, intensely red-orange fall color lights up these amazing native shrubs! Only growing 2-3 feet in height and width, Firefly™ is incredibly versatile and space-saving!

This Firefly™ Series Bush Honeysuckle, while related to the Vine and the Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica), it isn't invasive. It plays well with its garden neighbors for sure! Add to that deer resistance, plus disease resistance, and it can even grow in dry shade! Combined with its long bloom time and gorgeous foliage, and you have a most excellent landscape plant! Growing 3-4 feet in height and spreading 4-5 feet wide, these vigorous and incredibly adaptable, cold-hardy shrubs thrive throughout USDA growing zones 3-7.

Planting and Application:

The dramatic foliage and bright blooms make Firefly™ Nightglow™ an impressive accent, focal point and specimen shrub! Light up urban courtyards and upscale cottage borders alike with these space-saving ornamental shrubs! Try creating the opposite of a Moon Garden with dark and mysterious plants like Firefly™!

Savvy gardeners can appreciate why low-maintenance plants are a great idea! Why not use this sun and shade-tolerant shrub as the mainstay of your easy-care garden design? The modest size enables you to fit these anywhere! Add drama to planters and containers, balcony gardens and around sunny or shady patios! Small enough to line walkways, flank your front entry, or create low privacy hedges, garden edging, and colorful facer shrubs!

Use as a solid backdrop for smaller perennial borders or in a Butterfly Garden! Drama and color like this intensify and sets off everything else in your mixed-shrub beds and borders! Be sure to snip them regularly to include the unusual foliage in your cut flower bouquets!

Consider this your "go-to" landscape solution to cover ground and fill wide, open areas with knockout color. Include these all along the mid-ground of your mixed shrub border or as low hedges. They'll make a fantastic contrast in front of flowering trees and taller shrubs. Commercial and home landscapes can use these shrubs en masse in wide planting beds. Save a little room for a few bright flowering accent plants, and you'll be ready to relax in your space! They'll fill in your wide, open areas with brilliant color, butterflies and songbirds!

  • Dramatic Purple-Red Foliage & Stems
  • Upright Shrub Form Covered in Vivid Yellow Blooms
  • Butterflies & Beneficial Pollinators Galore!
  • Cold Hardy Native Cultivar - Well-Behaved & Not Invasive
  • Great Soil Stabilizer for Slopes & Embankments
  • Dramatic Specimen, Create Fantastic Focal Points, Hedges & Backdrops

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Bush Honeysuckles loves full sun and you will have the very best foliage color by planting yours where it will get 6 or more hours of sun a day, however, it will also perform well in partially shady areas at the cost of some of those adorable flowers and the intensity of color. Cold-hardy native cultivars in USDA zones 3 through 7, these shrubs are not particular on soil type, any well-drained soil is fine! Low moisture requirements and adaptability mean these are easy-care and low-maintenance shrubs.

Every other year, add a top dressing of a three-inch layer of arborist mulch. You'll keep the root system cool and moist. Mulch between plants also helps keep new mass plantings weed-free. Naturally shapely, you can easily keep them manicured with regular pruning in early spring to shape or shorten them. Or, let it do its thing for a more natural look. Should you need to prune, do so in the late winter or early spring, or the entire shrub can be cut down to the ground in early spring and will quickly re-grow from the roots.

  • Grows Well in Full Sun For Best Foliage Color
  • Thrives in Part Shade & Full Shade Too!
  • Wide Range of Well-Drained Soil Types
  • Regular Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune If Needed - Late Winter or Early Spring
  • Deer Tend to Leave it Alone
  • Easy Care & Low Maintenance
