Eastern Red Bud

The Eastern Red Bud is starting to look like a real tree, can’t wait to see it on another month.

Watching a redbud find its footing and start putting on real growth is one of the better things about spring. Once it hits its stride you will have those rosy pink blooms to look forward to each year, usually right before the leaves come in. Thanks for sharing the update, Karin, we hope the next month brings even more progress.

Great little tree

Great little tree. 2 weeks in the ground and already new growth. Everything I’ve gotten from this nursery has been stellar.

New growth after two weeks is a great sign that your redbud has settled in well. Eastern Redbuds can be a little slow to show their roots, so seeing that push early on means it's happy where you planted it. Thanks for the kind words, Pete, and for trusting us with your garden over the years. The Nature Hills Team

The tree arrived on time

The tree arrived on time, well wrapped and it appears in excellent shape. Happy with purchase.

Eastern Redbuds are resilient travelers when packed well, and it sounds like this one made the trip in good form. Give it a good deep watering as it settles into its new spot, especially over the first season. Thanks for the note, James.

Perfect Service

The plant arrived in perfect condition and is growing nicely. Thank you for your seamless service.

A redbud arriving in good shape and then taking off is exactly the goal. They can put on a nice flush of growth once they settle in, so it sounds like yours is right on track. Thanks for the kind words, Robert, and enjoy that tree come spring bloom time. The Nature Hills Team

Eastern Redbud

Great ordering experience, tree arrived quickly and healthy. It is already growing fast!

Redbud trees have a way of taking off once they settle in, so it's great to hear yours is already putting on growth. Thanks for the kind words about the ordering experience, Melanie. Enjoy watching it fill out over the seasons.

It's doing well

It's doing well, I can't say it is thriving but it looks fresh and healthy.

Fresh and healthy is a great sign for a newly planted Redbud, Irma. They tend to put energy into establishing roots in the first season before really taking off, so that steady, healthy look now usually means a strong burst of growth is coming. Thanks for sharing the update.

The Eastern Redbud single stem tree arrived securely packaged and the soil was well preserved

The Eastern Redbud single stem tree arrived securely packaged and the soil was well preserved. We have planted the tree and have new foliage buds starting to emerge. Stay tuned….!

New buds pushing out after planting is exactly the sign you want to see, Renata. Eastern Redbuds can take a little time to settle in, so that early growth is a good indicator the roots are happy. We hope it puts on a great show for you this season and for many springs to come.

First in the spring

My eastern redbud looks so cold and lonely siting in the snow but I keep looking at it because I know it will be one of the first plants to usher me into the glory of spring.

Eastern Redbud is Beautiful

My eastern redbud tree came in a box much bigger than expected. It's not often you get pleasantly surprised with an online purchase, but Nature Hills did.

Beautiful Redbud!

Love this tree! It's one of the first to bloom in my area. I really love that unique way the flowers grow right out of the branches and trunk.

Winter Interest

For the first time I really noticed this tree in my yard this winter. The irregular branching helps to keep me from looking at my drab winter landscape. Cannot wait for spring and the super flowers it produces!

Eastern Red Bud tree

This is a wonderful tree! Had it in my old house, this house, now I'm moving again, and want it for the next one. Currently, our tree is exposed to high winds, and I've never had a problem with it breaking.

Beautiful Tree to have...

I love this Eastern Redbud, I have 2 and they are still babies, easy to care for and grows pretty fast if watered pretty regular. I water mines planted in the full sun just this Spring Of 2006 in the morning and in the evening. They are so beautiful.

I Loved the Leaves

I first noticed an Eastern Redbud tree that was planted in the medium outside a sidewalk. The heartshaped leaves were beautiful and I always admired it. I finally asked the owner what kind of tree it was and he said it was an Eastern Redbud tree. I planted one in my yard and it is one of my favorite trees. The shape of the trunk and branches are beautiful and the flowers that bloom in the Spring are almost effervescent when the sun shines through them. I have had many compliments on this tree and I cant recommend it more. Im thinking of getting one to put in my front yard.

Beautiful tree!!!

We purchased an Eastern Red Bud because it was part of a free garden plan were wanting to use. It is probably the most beautiful tree Ive ever seen. Trunk is straight & the beautiful dark red heart shaped leaves have a deep green color on back. The spring blooms are breath taking!!! Even prettier than my japanese red maple!

Beautiful but sad.

In front of my apartment was a redbud tree, last spring it was so beautifully covered in purple buds. A recent ice storm demolished the beautiful tree, because it was leaning the ice made it so heavy it just fell over and now its cut up. I think I might ask the apartment complex to put up the same kind of tree, I miss it already.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of tree is this?

  • Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) is a small native flowering tree that produces electric pink-purple blooms on bare branches in early spring. This understory tree grows naturally in woodlands across eastern North America and serves as Oklahoma's state tree. Plant as a specimen focal point or group several together for maximum spring impact.

What planting zones is the Eastern Redbud hardy in?

  • Eastern Redbud is hardy in USDA zones 4-9, making it widely adaptable across most of the United States. This native tree thrives in various climates from cold northern regions to warmer southern areas. Shop at Nature Hills for healthy specimens that will establish quickly in your zone.

What type of soil does Eastern Redbud prefer and what pH level?

  • Eastern Redbud thrives in well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0-7.5. As a native understory tree, it adapts to various soil types from sandy loam to clay. Avoid waterlogged conditions, but consistent moisture is ideal. Test your soil pH and amend with lime if too acidic.

Is Eastern Redbud deer resistant?

  • Eastern Redbud is not considered deer resistant and may be browsed by deer, especially young trees and new growth. As a native understory tree, it's naturally part of wildlife food chains. Plant in areas with existing deer pressure only if you're prepared to use protection methods like fencing or repellents during establishment.

Will Eastern Redbud survive winter temperatures in zone 4?

  • Eastern Redbud is typically hardy to zones 5-9, making zone 4 winters too harsh for reliable survival. The extreme cold can damage branches and kill the tree. Consider hardier spring-blooming alternatives like serviceberry or shop cold-hardy cultivars at naturehills.com.
