Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes

Growing Zones 3-7
Need a lacy creamy shrub that's made for the shade! The Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Chantilly Lace Goatsbeard (Aruncus 'Chantilly Lace') is a shady garden dream plant! It is a challenge to find a plant that will give you a lot of spectacular flowers in the shade. You often have to choose between foliage and flowers in dappled shade, but not with Chantilly Lace!
This lovely plant has nice mounding clumps of foliage that are lacy fine-cut leaves with reddish stems. Showing off spring, summer, and fall! But the real show starts in midsummer when Chantilly Lace becomes smothered in sprays of cream-colored flowers that look like antique lace. When we say 'smothered' … we mean that it is so floriferous that sometimes all of the foliage is completely covered!
Reminiscent of Astilbe in foliage and flower, this hardy perennial sometimes goes by Goat's Beard or just Aruncus. The feathery foamy plumes shine in the dappled understory of shade gardens throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 7. The sprays of airy blooms are wonderful cut flowers!
Planting and Application:
Aruncus is a North American native, so you know that it is hardy and this hybrid cultivar is well-suited to our environs! It looks great planted with big leaved Hostas and fancy-colored Coral Bells, and will absolutely make that shady corner, dappled sun Cottage garden, and pollinator border in the understory come alive!
Bees and butterflies love it and appreciate the late summer nectar resource! Growing just 2-3 feet in height, Goat's Beard creates gorgeous edging and backdrops thanks to its incredibly ornamental foliage! Plant along pathways and throughout the landscape en masse for an easy care filler all growing season long!
- Airy Sprays of Creamy White Flowers
- Mid-Late Season Pollinator-Friendly Blooms
- Lacy Finely-Cut Foliage Mounds
- Hardy Perennial Plant For Shade
- Edging & Low Backdrops, Shade Garden Specimens & Container Thillers
#ProPlantTips for Care:
You'll want to be patient with Chantilly Lace Aruncus. It can be a slow grower the first season or two. Once it is established, though, it will put on a fabulous show every year! Make sure that you plant it where you want it and give it plenty of room to grow. It doesn't like to be moved once it's rooted in.
Perennial Goat's Beard does best in partial sun/partial shade, but plants in cooler climates with regular moisture can handle full sun. Plants in the hotter growing zones and drier conditions need to be planted in afternoon shade and full shade. Plant in well-drained moist soil, but once established can be drought tolerant. In either situation, you will find your perennial does best with a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch over its root system. Prune mounds after frost kills back the foliage in the late autumn and remove leaves from the area, covering the crowns with mulch or compost for the winter.
