Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 3-9
Heat up your landscaping with the Arizona Sun Gaillardia (Gaillardia 'Arizona Sun')! Talk about a tough plant! This is a super-hardy perennial that grows and blooms in even the hottest, driest conditions in your garden. Just like you'd expect from a plant with such a southwestern name, Arizona Sun loves sandy soil and hot sun and will reward you with drought-tolerant flowering all summer long.
Deep red centers with a sundrop-yellow ring around the edge pop against the silver-green leaves. Besides the hot color, Arizona Sun animates your garden by bringing in butterflies and other pollinators that love the profusion of flowers you get on each plant. Drought tolerant once established, Waterwise, xeric and great for fire-wise landscaping almost anywhere!
The Arizona Sun Gaillardia, also known as Blanket Flowers, bloom profusely, even in its first year. It forms a low, compact mound that is covered in daisy-like flowers from June to autumn. Both an All-American and Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner, Arizona Sun is sure to be a standout in your garden. How could it not be, with the richly colored flowers filling in those hot gaps in your borders and containers?
Planting and Application:
Plant these with spiky red and yellow flowers in your cottage border and perennial gardens by your front steps, or in Rock gardens and pollinator borders, and watch your garden dazzle all summer long into the fall. You'll have armloads of blooms for bouquets and plenty of nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies! Growing only 8-12 inches tall and 12-15 inches wide, you’ll get maximum color and blooms on a budget!
Pair with ornamental grasses, other extended bloom perennials and of course, other Blanket Flowers in the Arizona series and beyond! You'll have flower power for months without sacrificing space! Pot up in planters and containers on sunny patios and front porches, or dress up a balcony and terrace with hot color! So easy to care for, you will feel confident planting them as carefree edging and facer plants along garden edges and pathways. Don't forget to brighten that 'hell strip' between the sidewalk and the street!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Thriving throughout USDA growing zones 3 through 9, these are both heat and extremely cold-tolerant! Gaillardia isn't the best choice for heavy clay soil that will stay wet through the winter, though. Arizona Sun Gaillardia grows vigorously, thriving in average to low fertility and almost any type of well-drained soil. Doing their very best in full sun only. Gaillardia tends to self-seed, so deadhead after the blooms fade is recommended, and to encourage new blooms in profusion! Prune back in late fall once the foliage begins to yellow.
- Glorious in the Full Sun
- Low to Average Soil Moisture
- Well-Drained Average Soil
- Deadhead to Prevent Reseed & Encourage More Blooms
- Prune Back Late Fall
- Easy-Care, Adaptable, Drought-Tolerant, Deer & Rabbit Resistant
Order your award-winning Arizona Sun Gaillardia from Nature Hills Nursery today and enjoy their hot colors in your garden this year! You'll be glad you got more than one!
