Showy Spring clusters of yellow, star-shaped flowers become red-orange fall berries on the First Editions® Red Star St. John's Wort PP#21,313 (Hypericum inodorum 'Kolmarest'). Through the summer, the profusion of radiant yellow flowers is borne at the tips of contrasting red stems on the 2.5-foot rounded shrub.

This variety is considered deciduous and semi-evergreen, as they typically stay green in warm climates, but will show some Fall yellowing in cooler areas of the country where leaves turn color for the Autumn show. Plant them where you can see them, as they will attract pollinators, like butterflies and local bees. Luckily, Deer tend to avoid this variety.

The Red Star St. John's Wort variety was bred specifically for the florist industry for use of the cut red-orange berries (hips) in various arrangements. However, these shrubs will be just as happy and purposeful when growing in your yard! You will enjoy the appearance of this plant all season long and those seedpods bring fall color and persist for winter interest. Growing to a height of 2 - 3 feet in height and width without any fuss!

Planting and Application:

St. John's Wort is loved by florists and is a must-have for cutting gardens, and the seedpods are so cool to use in fashionable floral arrangements and florists love to use them for fall bouquets. Not just your cutting gardens, but also pollinator borders need St. John's Wort shrubs to feed bees and butterflies with vital nectar and pollen!

Need to fill an area with sunshine? Plant a few St. John's Wort and sit back and relax! The low-maintenance nature of these plants makes them perfect for erosion control on steep slopes, and en masse - transforming them into golden hillsides full of bees and butterflies!

Mixed-shrub borders, the back garden bed, and informal hedges are perfect spots for St. John's Wort to roam! Alternately, Red Star brings a neat 'scruffiness' to a formal planting bed as well as fitting in perfectly in informal country borders. Either way, St. John's Wort compliments your style!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hypericum needs to be planted in full sun and a touch of part shade/afternoon shade (especially in warmer climates). Plant in well-drained soil for the best growth possible because St. John's Wort cannot tolerate wet feet! St. John's Wort thrives in the southeast without any care at all. Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, in cooler parts of the country, Red Star may die back to the ground in harsh winters, but each spring, it will come back strong and true.

A generous layer of mulch retains moisture and insulates the root system from heat and winter's chill. St. John's Wort blooms on new wood, so prune while dormant to control the size and shape however, these really do their best in locations where they're allowed to be themselves. Don't worry about those out-of-the-way areas attracting deer, those uninvited guests will usually leave this plant alone!

  • Vigorous Growing Deciduous Flowering Shrub
  • Needs Well-Drained Soil & Moderate Moisture Needs

St. John's Wort is also a beneficial herb and has long been used to relieve everything from anxiety to inflammation. While we don't recommend using landscaping Hypercum medicinally, just the sunny blooms and the sheer amount of butterflies that arrive are sure to lift your spirits!
