Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 4-8
Looking for that one-of-a-kind, gorgeous plant that will lift your spirits and brighten even the rainest days? Take a look at the Alma Potschke Aster (Aster novae-angliae) because she will put a smile on your face! Easy to grow, long-lived, and fast-growing, these feature beautiful neon pink color that attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and beneficial pollinators for a sip of the nectar!
Alma displays a beautiful, bright neon rose pink daisy-like flower that is about quarter-sized. The flowers will bloom from late summer to late fall. This eye-catching beauty will add life to any sunny corner of the garden!
Alma is a tough cultivar of the North American native perennials! Deer and rabbits do not prefer her taste. Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 through mild zone 8, these have all the native adaptability and hardiness you'd expect from these wildflower cousins! Growing about 3 feet in height and width, sometimes a bit taller, an early season pinch back will create a nice neat, tidy mounded dome of growth and lots of flowers by fall!
Planting and Application:
Alma is a very versatile plant! Plant her in small-space yards, postage stamp properties and narrow borders, and upscale cottage gardens! They're as adapted to modern lots and urban conditions as they are at home in naturalized prairies or en masse to brighten entire swaths of the garden! You will enjoy these as cut flowers on your kitchen table so add them to a cutting border as well! The color will knock your socks off in bouquets!
Any garden becomes a pollinator garden with a couple of Asters! Combine with other fall-blooming perennials, other bright and colorful Asters like the Purple Dome New England Aster, while accenting ornamental grasses! Adaptable for upright color in large planters and porch pots, the fine texture, and late blooms are just what your garden needs when other flowers are starting to wind down for the season! Even small space container gardens can enjoy these vivid blooms!
- Beautiful, Bright Neon Rose-Pink Blooms
- Attracts Butterflies And Bees
- Late Summer Flowers
- Fast Grower & Incredibly Versatile Plant
- Beds, Borders, Pollinator & Cottage Border Gardens
#ProPlantTips for Care:
These herbaceous perennials thrive in full sun in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil. Alma does prefer moist, rich soils, but becomes drought, salt and wet soil tolerant, and are also Xeric once established but will appreciate summer watering and a healthy bed of mulch. Pinch back the stems before midsummer to promote fuller foliage, produce a greater number of flowers, and control the plant height (to prevent flopping by the plant).
- Full Sun Loving
- Adaptable Cold & Heat Hardy
- Moderate Moisture & Well-Drained Soils
- Pinch Back in Late Spring/Early Summer
- Deer Seldom Bother Them
