Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight for the sturdiest stems and most vibrant orange color. Afternoon shade is helpful in very hot climates, though too much shade results in leggy growth and fewer flower heads.
  • Soil: These plants need rich, loose soil that drains quickly. If you have heavy clay, mix in organic compost or peat moss to create a lighter environment that prevents the tubers from rotting.

Watering Requirements

Refrain from heavy watering until you see green sprouts poking through the soil to avoid rotting the tubers. Once the plant is growing, maintain consistent moisture with deep soakings two or three times a week. If the soil dries out too often, the plant will become stressed and produce significantly smaller flowers or drop its buds.

Pruning Tips

Dahlias bloom on new wood, so you should pinch off the top of the main stem once the plant reaches 12 inches tall. This acts like a haircut that encourages the plant to branch out and create a bushier shape with more flower buds. Regularly remove faded flowers throughout the summer to keep the plant from wasting energy on seed production.

Fertilizer Needs

Use a fertilizer low in nitrogen, such as a 5-10-10 formula, every thirty days once growth is well established. Avoid high nitrogen boosters late in the season. Excess nitrogen during the late summer forces soft green growth that makes the tubers much more likely to rot during winter storage.

Smokey and smoldering blooms, the Firepot Dahlia (Dahlia 'Firepot') is a gorgeous ember of a bloom with fully double blooms that glow from within! The yellow centers transform to smokey apricot-orange cupped petals. Sometimes pinkish-hued, these blooms stand atop graceful reddish stems and toothy green foliage.

These upright plants grow fast from tubers and bloom all summer into fall! Pollinators and Hummingbirds will flock to them, just be sure to plant a few extra so you won't feel you are depriving them of their dinner when you snip a few for your bouquets indoors!

Dahlia are hardy perennial tubers throughout USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11 and wonderful houseplants, annual accents, or seasonal flowering plants throughout all growing zones. Force indoors in a greenhouse, sunroom, or sunny window for winter color.

Planting and Application:

These fantastically hued blooms are perfect for cut flower gardens and pollinator beds! Their space-saving mounded foliage looks fantastic in pots and planters as filler, while those glorious blooms stand tall atop their slender stems as amazing focal points and colorful specimens! Porches, patios, and balconies in sunny locations allow even container gardeners to enjoy these blooms!

In warm, frost-free growing zones, plant Dahlia in rows or groupings to maximize their size and color in the landscape! Cottage borders and perennial gardens gain a long-lasting blooming plant that accents all other summer and autumn blooming perennials and shrubs! Mix with your Roses for additional blooms for bouquets and a frilly green skirting around their bases.

  • Glowing Double Blooms & Cupped Petals
  • Beautiful Cut Flowers & Pollinator Magnets
  • Great in Containers & Houseplants
  • Specimen & Focal Point in Garden Beds & Borders

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Dahlia blooms all summer without fading in full to partial sun locations and prefers planted in a wide range of soil types, clay, and acidic conditions, as long as they're well-drained! Soak the tubers for a few hours before planting and plant them with their fingers spread out gently and pointing downwards. To ensure even moisture, place mulch around the base of the plant. Adding 3-4 inches of mulch helps considerably. Dahlia tubers can be dug after frost, then place in paper bags or boxes of sand in a cool place and sprinkle a little water on the tubers periodically to keep them from drying out.

  • Full Sun to Partial Shade
  • Well-Drained Organic Soil
  • Easy Care Perennial
  • Moderate Consistent Moisture
  • Lift Tubers in Cold Growing Zones in Fall After Frost
  • Appreciates Monthly Fertilizer
