Not all Bamboo shrubs, plants, or Bamboo trees are alike. You want a well-behaved Bamboo shrub to decorate your landscape without worry!
Nature Hills offers two types of Bamboo to suit your needs:
- Heavenly Bamboo, also known as Nandina domestica or Sacred Bamboo
- Clumping Bamboo, also known as Fargesia
Although a Nandina shrub isn't a true Bamboo plant, it looks quite similar! It's also extremely attractive, thanks to its thin stems and incredible coloration in its new foliage.
True Bamboo has that iconic fast growth and lacy, fine textured foliage on strong stems. Quickly creating dense thickets of spreading roots that cover wide swaths of ground fast!
Here you will find some of the most popular Sacred Bamboo for sale, including these top-selling varieties:
- Compact Heavenly Bamboo with amazing scarlet coloration and berries for indoor arrangements!
- Lemon Lime Nandina with vivid yellow new growth and a mid-sized rounded growth habit.
- Flirt™ Nandina, which stays small but dazzles with glowing red new growth!
- Twilight Nandina features icy white, light green, and bronze foliage.
- Dragon Head Bamboo with reddish new growth and accents and lacy yet tight-knit growth for lush screening!
- Our Clumping Bamboo varieties are not like the thicket-forming tall Bamboo tree that forms forests for panda bears. It stays in its place, delivering an outstanding tropical vibe without hassle!

How fast does Bamboo grow?
The growth rate depends on the cultivar of Heavenly Bamboo and the type of Clumping Bamboo. Some of the natural dwarf varieties grow slowly to ultimately reach a petite size, while others might grow 12 to 24 inches a year.
Modern Nandina domestica cultivars have a compact growth habit. In mild winters, the evergreen foliage is delicate but stays lush year-round. Bamboo plants can grow upwards of 2 feet a year or more!
Check out the Plant Highlights section on each product page to get more details on each specific plant. You'll find info on care, growth rate, size, and more!
You will also want to know your growing zone, which is something you can find out by entering your zip code in the field above the Plant Highlights section.
Are there Bamboo plants near me that will be invasive?
With NatureHills.com, you'll never need to worry! That's because we follow all state and local regulations we are the very first online plant nursery to use Plant Sentry™ to block the shipment of regulated plant material into areas where any plants can potentially be problematic.
Heavenly Bamboo can develop brilliant berries with pollination. We recommend that you prune after flowering or snip away a few stems of berries to use as gorgeous indoor arrangements to enjoy during the holidays! Clumping Bamboo can spread and form colonies, but the stems and leaves look fantastic in floral design and garden crafts!
You'll appreciate these special plants in your landscape. Both varieties bring so much color and texture to your space while asking little in return!

FAQS for Buying Bamboo Nandina Bushes Online
What Is the Difference Between Heavenly Bamboo and True Bamboo?
What Is the Difference Between Heavenly Bamboo and True Bamboo?
Heavenly Bamboo, also known as Nandina domestica, isn’t a true Bamboo at all—it just looks like one with its upright canes and feathery foliage! Unlike aggressive, fast-spreading Bamboo trees, Nandina is a well-behaved broadleaf evergreen shrub. True Bamboo, such as Fargesia (Clumping Bamboo), features that iconic tropical look and graceful texture, but stays put without becoming invasive. Both offer colorful foliage and year-round beauty!
Are Heavenly Bamboo Shrubs Invasive?
Are Heavenly Bamboo Shrubs Invasive?
Nope, not the ones we offer! At Nature Hills Nursery, we only sell non-invasive, modern Nandina varieties that follow local regulations. We’re proud to partner with Plant Sentry™, which ensures our plants won’t be shipped into restricted areas. You’ll get all the showy color without the worry—just the way Ma Nature intended!
Can I Use Bamboo Shrubs for Privacy or Screening?
Can I Use Bamboo Shrubs for Privacy or Screening?
Absolutely! Both Nandina and Fargesia Bamboo shrubs work wonders as living privacy screens. Clumping Bamboo like Dragon Head grows upright with dense foliage, perfect for blocking views and dampening sound. Nandinas such as Twilight or Lemon Lime offer colorful foliage and texture while staying compact and low-maintenance. Plant them in groups for a natural, layered barrier!
How Tall Do Heavenly Bamboo Plants Grow?
How Tall Do Heavenly Bamboo Plants Grow?
Heavenly Bamboo height varies by variety. Some compact forms like Flirt™ Nandina stay petite—under 2 feet—while others can stretch to 6 feet or more. They’re ideal for layering in landscape designs, from front-of-border pops to mid-height hedges. Always check the Plant Highlights for mature size so you can plan your planting perfectly!
Do Bamboo Bushes Need a Lot of Maintenance?
Do Bamboo Bushes Need a Lot of Maintenance?
Not at all! Both Nandina and Clumping Bamboo are super low-maintenance. Water them well during their first year, then enjoy their easygoing nature. Prune Heavenly Bamboo lightly after flowering to shape it or harvest a few berry-covered stems for indoor holiday decor. Clumping Bamboo just needs occasional thinning to keep it looking neat and tropical-fresh.
