Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This variety thrives in 2 to 4 hours of morning sun with dappled shade for the rest of the day. While it can handle more shade than most perennials, too little light will result in smaller flower plumes and a less compact shape.
  • Soil: Aim for rich, organic soil that holds moisture well but does not stay swampy. If you are dealing with heavy clay, mix in several inches of compost to help the roots breathe while still keeping them cool and damp.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist like a wrung-out sponge during the first year to help the root system lock into place. Maggie Daley is more drought-tolerant than other Astilbes once established, but it will still signal for help with crispy, brown leaf edges if it gets too dry. During the heat of summer, plan on a deep soaking once or twice a week if the rain does not do the job for you.

Pruning Tips

Since this plant grows its flowers on new stems each year, you can be quite flexible with your timing. Think of pruning as a simple seasonal cleanup by cutting back the spent flower stalks to the base of the plant once they fade to keep the foliage looking fresh. You can leave the foliage alone until late winter or early spring and then shear the entire plant to the ground to make room for new growth.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring just as the first green "noses" begin to poke through the soil. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the growing season because they force tender new growth that cannot handle the winter cold. A fresh layer of wood mulch or compost applied every spring also acts like a slow-release vitamin boost for the soil.

Featuring a profusion of showy spikes of mauvy-purple panicles in mid to late summer, the drop-dead gorgeous Maggie Daley Astilbe (Astilbe chinensis 'Maggie Daley') is an excellent perennial for lightly shaded areas!

This late summer blooming Astilbe has fuzzy flowers that are fully packed closely together to create fuzzy, branched pyramidal spires. They resemble a bouquet as they stand tall above shiny, bronze-green, ferny foliage. Maggie Daley blooms later than other Astilbes, much to the delight of your bees and butterflies! Even a few Hummingbirds will drop by for a sip of the nectar!

Plant this dense, vigorous-growing perennial for additional color in the shady area of your garden! Astilbe is considered very disease, deer, and rabbit-resistant; growing best throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 9! These herbaceous perennials can top out at about 2 feet or more when in bloom, and their mounding, fountain-like mounds of greenery can spread about 16-20 inches wide.

Planting and Application:

Because Maggie Daley handles partial shade, dappled shade, and consistently moist part sun locations, it is wonderfully versatile for a wider range of landscape possibilities! Growing even in full-shade gardens (in hotter climates), the lacy foliage and unique foamy flowers are sure to brighten the gloom! They especially look right at home among like-minded Coral Bells, Tiarella, and Foamy Bells!

Use these beautiful plants as low edging and facer plants with the mauvy purple pop of color in the late summer months. Pollinator gardens, shady Cottage gardens, and of course mixed Perennial borders all gain from these fantastic plants! Don't forget a few in your Cutting Garden for unique bouquets indoors too!

Even potted up in mixed or single species planters around your covered porches and patios, Maggie Daley adds its beauty both in flower and as a foliage plant! Groupings amp up the effect, and long-winding ribbons add elegance to your landscape! Try planting a row before your evergreen foundation planting to add a touch of frilly beauty to your home's curb appeal!

  • Mauvy Purple Flower Spires
  • Loads of Pollinators & Hummingbirds
  • Tall Flowers on Mounded Bronze-Green Ferny Foliage
  • Shade Perennial Blooms Late-Summer
  • Specimens, Planters, Edging, Groupings & Shade Garden Accents

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Astilbes are long-lived Perennials that are the most comfortable when grown in organically rich soil and light shade to filtered sun. They will grow in full shade, but will not bloom as prolifically. They also perform best in soil that is consistently moist with a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around their root systems.

Though they are easy to grow, Astilbes have one critical requirement - they need moist soil, however, Maggie Daley can tolerate brief drought better than other Astilbe. The plants must have consistently moist soil, especially in higher sun amounts and hotter climates.

Fertilize Astilbes in late spring before flowering starts. You can deadhead after the flowers fade to tidy up the mounds, but wait to cut back the old foliage until spring, as it will help protect the crown from winter damage. A topping of compost in the late fall helps considerably as well.

  • Dense & Fast Growing In Part Sun/Part Shade & Full Shade
  • Consistent Moisture & Tolerates Brief Drought
  • Rich, Well-Drained Soil
  • Prune Back Early Spring
  • Deer, Rabbit & Disease-Resistant

Hurry and pick up the mid-season fuzzy blooms of the luscious Maggie Daley Astilbe today and don't let your pollinators and shade gardens go without these classic perennials another day! Now available at NatureHills.com!
