Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Strike it rich with the Chick Charms® GIANTS Gold Mine PPAF Hardy Succulent (Sempervivum x 'Gold Mine') and enjoy a unique form of hardy Hens-and-Chicks Succulent! Featuring incredible symmetrical, pointed foliage that is bright blood red. Each spiky leaf is tipped in brilliant gold! The 'hens' form rounded balls of concentric fleshy leaves resulting in a vivid and eye-catching, two-tone effect!

Gold Mine is slower-growing and forms rosettes 3 inches in height but can reach 6 - 9 inches wide! The orderly, concentric layers are big attention-getters! In the summer, a pinkish flower forms upon a slender stem, and rises a couple of inches above the rosette for pollinators and your enjoyment!

Gold Mine hardy Succulents are surprisingly winter-hardy, and these Alpine natives grow in any rocky foothold possible throughout USDA growing zones 3 through 9. They are excellent container plants outdoors, and some even like to sneak one indoors in a sunny window as a xeric houseplant.

Planting and Application:

Ideal plants for the Rock garden and crevice garden! Tuck Gold Mine into rock walls and retaining walls where they form dense colonies of vibrant color. These Hens-and-Chicks cousins are very xeric plants and great as groundcovers in some of the toughest conditions in the landscape. They look best in groupings and massed at the front of the garden.

Pot Gold Mine up in a stylish container, mix with other succulents, or group together for the biggest color show! Let them spill out of a decorative pot or strawberry planter, or even a hanging planter anywhere sunny! Keep Sempervivum indoors as darling houseplants - try displaying them in a fancy container, as Kokedama, or display them on a wall or desk! What a lovely accent and gift plant!

  • Vibrant Gold Tips Atop Deep Red Centers
  • Symmetrical Rosettes of Clumping & Spreading Plants
  • Low Growing, Hardy & Steady Growth
  • Great in Containers & Planters - Indoors & Out
  • Groundcover, Crevice & Rock Gardens, Xeric & Garden Edging

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hardy Succulent plants are xeric, but they still need water to thrive. Best in full sun without shrinking, these thrive in very little water once established. During the summer heat, they will need to be watered more frequently. Allow plants to dry out slightly between waterings, but don't overwater. Plant in full sun outside and bright indirect sun indoors. Grown Hens and Chicks in low to moderate fertility, even thriving in poor fertility, as long as it is well-drained soil.

Overwintering & Maintaining Hardy Succulents

Sempervivum produces its own babies after a single season and gradually replaces itself over time every few years. After 3 years and having produced many baby plants, a Sempervivum grows a tall center stalk that blooms before the plant dies. Every few years divide your clumps and remove the old, less vigorous rosettes that have flowered that summer in late autumn to keep the plant rejuvenated and the clumps clean.

Although winter hardy, the key to success is sharply drained soil and protection from a site that will receive too much water. Sometimes your container-grown Sempervivum will appreciate moving the pots against the east side of the house during winter which will help reduce the water in late fall and winter.

  • Full Sun & Bright Indirect Indoors
  • Low Water Needs
  • Fast Draining Soil
  • Clean Mounds As Needed
  • Protect In Winter & From Heavy Rain
