Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

A winter delight, introducing the Blue Cascade® Evergreen Distylium (Distylium 'PIIDIST-II') is a landscaper's best-kept secret! This versatile broadleaf evergreen will add texture and low-lying interest to your yard or garden all year round! With leaves that defy gravity and celebrate life by growing straight upward, the cascading branching of this plant will have your neighbors asking where you discovered it!

As part of the low-maintenance Distylium species, this delightful plant is part of the Witch Hazel family, it is known for its perky blue-green leaves that blush from red to burgundy from January to March! More cold-hardy than other Distylium, the matte leaves tend to absorb light which makes its color purer and clearer, giving it a multi-layered effect. Their silvery backsides are clearly visible from most angles since they grow directly skyward!

The Blue Cascade® Evergreen Distylium's branches grow horizontally in a layered habit which will give your garden a fuller, denser, more interesting blanket of foliage. As it changes color during winter, its leaves redden around their margins and its sun-exposed leaves first, for a delightfully multi-colored show. When new leaves sprout, they emerge reddish brown. And because it's a broadleaf evergreen, you can enjoy its foliage all year long!

Planting and Application:

This broadleaf evergreen is perfect for blanketing your yard with rich and unique foliage! It works well wherever you may use a Boxwood, but it offers larger leaves, unique texture, tidy natural form, and the bonus of later winter flowers.

That's right! It produces small, puffy, adorable red flowers along its stems during winter. Its red blooms next to its green foliage create wonderful holiday colors and entice pollinators when they need them most.

The Blue Cascade® Evergreen Distylium makes a great border plant or low hedge. Take advantage of its attractive foliage and tough demeanor by planting several in a mass planting or your woodland garden. You'll love Distylium as low screening and property definition, as backdrops and year-round garden greenery, delightful facer plants, and more!

  • Upright Growing Broadleaf Evergreen Foliage
  • Attractive Year-Round Interest
  • Reddish New Growth & Blue-Green Leaves Redden in The Winter Sun
  • Petite Red Winter Blooms For Pollinators
  • Arching Mounding Branches 3-4 Feet Tall & Wide
  • Fantastic Hedges, Backdrops, Containers & Specimens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Because it's not prone to diseases or insect issues, while also being heat-tolerant and drought-tolerant, the Blue Cascade® Evergreen Winter Hazel is a wonderful alternative to Boxwoods, Laurels, Junipers, and Hollies.

It grows in wetter soils but does best with medium-moisture, well-drained soil. It thrives in full sun to partial shade. Top-dress the soil with 3-4 inches of arborist mulch each year. You can prune it to help it maintain an attractive and manageable size. If you live in an urban area, it is a great size to offer your tighter spaces a verdant appearance. You can even skip shearing and just perform a renewal pruning every 3-5 years instead.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Once Established Handles Wet to Dry Sites
  • Any Well-Drained Soil Type
  • Prune After Flowering If Needed
  • Pest & Disease-Resistant, Even in the South!
  • Great Alternative to Boxwood
