Read on to learn how to keep Wintercreepers of all shapes and sizes growing their best!

Wintercreeper Sun Requirements

Wintercreeper does well with full sun and even half-day sun in hotter growing zones. Euonymus, especially variegated forms, need at least 6 hours of sun a day for the best color show. But you will still enjoy the glossy, round green leaves and winter tones in partial sun/shade locations too!

Wintercreeper Soil & Drainage Needs

Tolerating moderate moisture to drought once they are established, these tough beauties' only major requirement is to be planted in almost any type of well-drained soil! The roots will not do well in boggy, water-logged, and heavy clay locations. Euonymus will tolerate light clay as long as it drains.

If you suspect poor drainage, create a bermed planting area by mounding 12-18" of topsoil and planting onto that mounded raised area to correct the drainage.

Euonymus Moisture Needs

Water new installations of Euonymus regularly during their first few months in the ground. We recommend using the Finger Test. Once established, however, Euonymus are low-water-usage shrubs and groundcovers, becoming drought-tolerant and xeric even! But to keep your plants stress-free and growing their best in the long-term, provide supplemental moisture during the hottest heat and extended drought periods.

Pruning Euonymus

Fertilizing Euonymus

In optimal conditions, Euonymus grows at a medium to fast rate for fast fill and quick cover. Please check the Plant Highlights on every product page for specifics. Fertilize in spring with a good, slow-release evergreen shrub formula.

Pruning Euonymus Shrubs & Groundcover Wintercreeper

Euonymus can withstand heavy pruning, but usually, you won’t need to fuss over your plant beyond a few snips to shape or a bit of light raking in spring. They thrive without much care!

Planting Euonymus Wintercreeper Shrubs

Purple Wintercreeper Euonymus

Planting Wintercreeper is easy! Dig your hole twice as wide as the root ball, but only just as deep. Never plant Euonymus too deeply! They have shallow root systems and will smother easily.

Water your new plants well to eliminate air pockets in the root zone. Provide a moderate amount of supplemental water, especially in the first year. Outdoor container-grown plants will need consistent water for their whole lives.

All plants, both in containers and in the ground, appreciate a protective 3-4 inches of arborist mulch around their root system, but not piled up against their trunks and crowns. This layer holds soil moisture more consistently and insulates the root system from heat and chill all year round!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can euonymus grow in shade?

Euonymus tolerates partial shade well, though it performs best in full sun to partial sun conditions across USDA zones 4-9. While these adaptable shrubs can handle some shade, they may produce less dense foliage and more elongated growth in deeper shade conditions. For optimal growth and the most compact form, plant your euonymus in locations that receive at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

How to prune euonymus?

Prune euonymus in late winter or early spring before new growth begins, typically in February or March in zones 4-9. For shaping, cut back up to one-third of the plant's height and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches with clean, sharp pruning shears. Wintercreeper varieties can handle aggressive pruning if needed for size control or rejuvenation. Always make cuts just above an outward-facing bud or branch junction to encourage proper healing and growth direction.

Does euonymus have deep roots?

Euonymus typically develops a shallow to moderate root system rather than deep taproots, with most feeder roots concentrated in the top 12-18 inches of soil. This fibrous root structure makes them excellent for erosion control and allows them to establish quickly in zones 4-9. Their shallow root system also means they can thrive in thin soils where deep-rooted plants might struggle. Plant them 3-4 feet apart and water regularly the first year to help establish this spreading root network.

Does euonymus stay green in winter?

Yes, Wintercreeper Euonymus varieties stay green year-round as broadleaf evergreens, providing continuous color and structure throughout winter in USDA zones 4-9. These tough plants maintain their deep green, light green, or variegated foliage even in harsh winter conditions without fading. For best winter performance, plant Wintercreeper Euonymus in locations with good drainage and protection from harsh winter winds.

Do euonymus lose their leaves?

Most euonymus varieties are broadleaf evergreens that retain their leaves year-round, providing consistent foliage throughout zones 4-9. However, some species like Burning Bush (Winged Euonymus) are deciduous and will drop their leaves in fall after displaying brilliant autumn color. Wintercreeper euonymus specifically maintains its green to variegated foliage through winter without fading. Check your specific variety when purchasing to ensure you're getting the evergreen type if year-round coverage is your goal.

How much sun does it need?

Euonymus thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions, with most varieties performing best when they receive at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. These adaptable plants tolerate various light conditions exceptionally well, making them suitable for challenging spots in zones 4-9 where other plants might struggle. For optimal growth and the most vibrant foliage color, especially in variegated varieties, plant your Euonymus in a location that gets morning sun with some afternoon protection in extremely hot climates.

Are euonymus evergreen?

Some euonymus varieties are evergreen while others are deciduous. Wintercreeper Euonymus are broadleaf evergreens that maintain their foliage year-round in zones 4-9, while Burning Bush (Winged Euonymus) are deciduous shrubs that drop their leaves in fall. The evergreen types provide continuous green coverage and structure to your landscape through winter. Choose Wintercreeper varieties if you need reliable evergreen foliage for your garden.

Are euonymus invasive?

Some euonymus species, particularly Euonymus alatus (Burning Bush) and Euonymus fortunei (Wintercreeper), are considered invasive in many parts of North America and can spread aggressively into natural areas. These plants readily self-seed and can outcompete native vegetation in zones 4-9. Before planting, check your local invasive species lists and consider native alternatives like spicebush or ninebark that provide similar landscape benefits without ecological risks.

What USDA hardiness zones are best for growing Euonymus?

Most Euonymus varieties thrive in USDA hardiness zones 4-9, though specific cultivars may have slightly different ranges. Evergreen types like Euonymus japonicus perform best in zones 6-9, while deciduous burning bush (Euonymus alatus) tolerates colder conditions in zones 4-8. The shrubs handle both heat and cold well within their zones, making them reliable choices for diverse climates. Check your specific variety's zone requirements before planting to ensure optimal performance in your garden.

Do they need water?

Euonymus shrubs have low moisture needs once established and can tolerate drought conditions. While they need regular watering during their first growing season to develop strong root systems, mature plants are quite drought-tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Established Euonymus typically only need supplemental watering during extended dry periods of 2-3 weeks without rain.
