Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Your landscape needs a little admiration! A ray of ravishing beauty, health, and unlimited landscaping potential, The Admiration Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Admiration') is an award-winning shrub that will light up your garden with its uniquely brilliant foliage and attractive compact form.

The Admiration Barberry is luminescent and highly ornamental! It bursts with cranberry-red foliage with striking yellow-green margins and a high-gloss sheen, this shrub offers color and interest that lights up the landscape.

This Barberries leaves are ovular and graphic, plus finely textured and compactly growing for an outstanding show. They transform from a bright crimson to a deep red violet throughout the growing season.

You can expect the Admiration Barberry to light up with petite, precious pinkish-yellow blooms through summer and then in the fall, cherry-red berries! Both are sought-after by butterflies and birds!

Best of all, the Admiration Barberry doesn't grow above knee height and grows at a slow rate, making it easy to maintain, rarely needing shaping or trimming! Deer seldom bother with these thorny little shrubs and like other Barberry, Admiration is heat and cold-tolerant throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 8!

Please note, that in some locations, Barberry can grow a bit "too well". Find out if you can safely include these colorful shrubs in your landscape by typing in your zip code in our Hardiness Zone Finder, located above the Plant Highlights to find out, or contact your local County Extension Office for more information.

Planting and Application:

This tiny dwarf more than makes up for its size by the use of sheer color! A wonderful low-maintenance choice for a wide array of garden uses, tight squeezes, urban city lots, and even container gardening!

With a compact, mounding form, the Admiration Barberry makes a delightful and manageable choice as a front border, a small colorful accent, or a foundation planting that pops. You can also use these vibrant shrubs as a low hedge that thrives on slopes and embankments.

The perfect edging and low-border plant, light up the garden and landscaping beds, and you'll define the transition between lawn and garden with high-color impact shrubs! Use a row before a hedge of evergreens or large shrubs that may be getting 'leggy', Admiration will act as a pretty facer plant to hide their bare lower stems.

Front yard landscaping has never been easier with these tough and ornamental shrubs, and you can create big splashes of color that easily stand up to urban environments and pollution.

  • Showy Red Foliage & Yellow Margins
  • Dwarf Variety - Stays Compact
  • High-Gloss Foliage
  • Tiny Yellow Spring Blossoms For Pollinators
  • Fall Berries For Birds
  • Low-Maintenance Edging, Borders, Container Plants & Space-Saving Accents

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Your Admiration Barberry will do best with full sun, and can tolerate partial shade, however, the foliage color will not be quite as brilliantly colored. It also prefers well-drained soil that is slightly acidic and well-mulched to block weed competition. Plant with Nature Hills Root Booster and ensure a consistent watering schedule for new plants. Try using the Finger Test to make sure you don't let new installations dry out. This is a set-it-and-forget-it shrub that rarely needs to be watered after getting established, becoming wonderfully waterwise!

Pruning is only necessary to remove wild hairs and is best done after the flowers have finished. You'll want to wear thick gloves when working with Barberry.

Deer doesn't prefer the taste, but we always recommend Deer Repellent Spray on new plantings from day one if you live in an area with heavy pressure. Reapply according to the directions through the growing season.

  • Full Sun/Partial Shade
  • Acidic Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs - Waterwise Once Established
  • Rarely Needs Pruning - Prune After Flowering Only
  • Pest & Disease Resistant & Deer Seldom Bother Barberry
  • Very Cold-Hardy
