Alexander's Great Brunnera (Brunnera macrophylla 'Alexander's Great') is an incredibly large and versatile shade garden plant! The enormous leaves are an impressive size and carry a unique color that stands out in the shade!
Also known as Siberian Bugloss, the large heart-shaped leaves are a dark green-gray and predominantly covered in a vibrant silver overlay! The contrast and size become a fantastic backdrop to the spring and summer blooms.
Just like tiny Forget-Me-Nots, the bright sky blue flowers appear in early spring, rising on airy and graceful stems above the dramatic, heavily silvered leaves.
This wonderful combination adds so much to the full shade and part sun garden lighting up dreary corners of your landscape on a large scale!
How to Use Alexander's Great Brunnera In The Landscape
Readily naturalizing if allowed, Brunnera forms large clumps of mounding foliage. Perfect for filling in areas under trees and large shrubs or as a backdrop to partly shaded beds and borders.
The large-sized leaves are a dramatic specimen and focal point! These are fantastic in containers and patio pots for cool, shady porches and balconies.
The spreading nature allows Brunnera to become a fantastic groundcover. For those hard-to-mow slopes, these slowly spread and colonize dry shady hills in beauty and for your safety.
Moisture tolerant as well, Brunnera are versatile enough to ramble along streams and riverbanks as they are in Rock gardens and Cottage gardens, while displaying graceful beauty as edging for your driveway, paths and shaded garden beds.
The silvery gray-green leaves make a striking combination when paired with other blue and silver-leaved plants such as Ghost Lamium, Hosta and Liriope, or purple foliage plants like Palace Purple Coral Bells.
#ProPlantTips For Care
Brunnera prefers full shade in hot climates and morning sun, fantastic in partial shade and dappled shady areas for the cooler USDA growing zones of 3 through 8.
Incredibly cold-hardy, Alexander’s Giant Brunnera does best in consistently moist, well-drained soil, and doing its very best in rich soils, be sure to enrich your soil with compost and organic matter at the time of planting.
Prune in very early spring before the new foliage emerges, and gives the plant a fresh clean look for the growing season. Otherwise, Brunnera does not require a lot of extra care, so it’s a sure garden pleaser!
It's a great idea to add mulch near the base of the plants to maintain adequate soil moisture. Mulch also insulates the roots from heat and cold, plus adds a fantastic finished look to your landscaping.
Requiring consistent moisture during that crucial establishment period, Brunnera are dry shade tolerant once established. For the best look, health and longevity of your investment, however, be sure to water in times of drought and during the summer heat.
Adding to the benefits, this variety of Brunnera is deer-resistant and bee-friendly! Add this one to your cart and place your order online today at NatureHills.com for the highly sought-after true blue blooms and unique silvery-green foliage of Alexander’s Great Brunnera!
