Fast-Growing Tree with Edible Fruit

The White Mulberry is a fast-growing, deciduous tree that produces an edible harvest of unique colored Mulberries. Plant one in a side yard where you can enjoy its features without concerns about dropping fruit.

The crown tends toward a spreading nature which is popular with wildlife. Birds will enjoy visiting your yard for the shelter and food your tree provides. The White Mulberry is wonderful as a shade tree or windbreak. It requires very little care and can tolerate drought, frost or poor soils.

One-inch raspberry-like fruits ripen in early to mid summer, and attain a delectable red-pink hue. You'll know the fruit is ripe when your tree is alive with the excited cheeps of the songbirds that have come to feast.

You'll enjoy the fruit for a snack right from your very own tree, or save some of the sweet berries for homemade Mulberry preserves or wine. A treat that is hard to come by and is a special, rare gift for friends and family.

The White Mulberry's autumn raiment includes various shades of yellow, adding a bit of fall color to your landscape.

If you'd like a durable tree that produces delicious fruit every year, look no further than the White Mulberry.

Im an iranian who moved to USA 37 years ago. White mullbery is well liked in iran and its fruit is desired by all folks. It taste very sweet and can be made into jams, preservative, and it makes akiller ice cream falvour. It is also good fro drying. many iranian eat the dried fruit by mixing it with raisen, nuts and other dried good. it is an excellent source of energy and it is all natural. In the spring you always see iranin kids on top branches shaking the branches so their parents can collect the fruit under the tree in a spread out bed sheet. It is wonderful fruit sent by God for all humans to eat. White Mullbery and red Poergrante trees have been around for 6 thousand years and it is metioned in bible. Bon appetite.

The Perfect Tree!

We moved into a home about 5 years ago with a mulberry already planted in the yard. It was only 15 tall and 15 wide, but in 5 years it has grown to about 25 high and 25 wide. I found out that it is a male mulberry, so it does not flower or fruit - which is good, because female mulberries are contantly dropping their spent flowers and ripe fruit. My tree-climbing daughter loves this tree! It provides great shade, is low-maintenace and is very strong. It does require some pruning to keep it from spreading too wide and for taming branches. The male does produce a lot of pollen in the spring, and I am allergic to it, so I have to keep the windows that are located on that side of the house shut (for only a few days, though.) You will love this tree!

Dear Mimi,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your White Mulberry! It's thrilling to hear how much your tree has grown and become such a beloved part of your yard — especially with your adventurous daughter enjoying its sturdy branches. You’ve painted a perfect picture of a tree that is not only strong and shade-giving but also well-suited for your needs given the male fruitless variety.

We appreciate you highlighting both the upsides and the few considerations, like managing branch spread and the spring pollen challenge. For anyone with allergies, closing windows during pollen season, as you do, is a smart practice. You might also consider gently shaking the tree on high pollen days or using an air purifier indoors to ease symptoms further.

If you ever want tips specifically on pruning your mulberry to keep it controllable and healthy, we have detailed guidance available on our website, and our team is always happy to assist you.

Thanks again for your thoughtful review, and for helping others discover just how wonderful a White Mulberry can be!

Good Tree for Birdlovers

I have a multi-trunked white mulberry tree on my property that must be about 30 feet tall and almost as wide. I am not sure exactly how old it is. It was planted by the birds many years ago and I let it mature on our hedgerow between our property and a neighbors cow pasture. I believe the reason that it is multi-trunked is that I cut it down to the ground for many years to maintain the view but was eventually impressed by the tenacity of the tree for its always re-sprouting. Eventually I let it grow. The fruit is very sweet it tastes like sugar water. I find it has no pronounced flavor other than being sweet. I find this tree extremely useful because it fruits about the same time as my Black Tartan and Bing Cherry Trees. What is so good about this is that the birds prefer the Mulberries to cherries and they leave(most of)my cherries alone. The ripened mulberries fall to the base of the tree when ripe and they almost look like a white shag carpet at peak season. This attracts many species of birds, as well as woodchucks, squirrels, and even the odd deer. I get a lot of enjoyment out of watching all the wildlife that the tree attracts.

Hello Gary,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your White Mulberry tree! It’s truly inspiring to hear about how the birds started that multi-trunked beauty and how your patience and care have allowed it to thrive. Your story perfectly highlights the resilience of mulberries and their incredible ability to bounce back when regularly pruned.

We love that the mulberry’s sweet, sugar-water flavor and fruiting timeframe work in harmony with your cherry trees to attract and satisfy such a delightful variety of wildlife. It’s a reminder of how thoughtfully a garden—or hedgerow like yours—can become a natural haven. Watching all those birds, woodchucks, squirrels, and deer enjoying the landscape must be a wonderful daily joy!

If you’re interested in maximizing wildlife visitation even further, you might enjoy adding native berry-producing shrubs or wildflowers around the mulberry to expand the variety of food and cover for birds. Also, incorporating few nesting boxes nearby could encourage even more feathered guests to linger.

Thanks again for taking the time to recount your experience and for helping create a wildlife-friendly space that benefits both you and your local wild residents. We’re wishing you many more seasons of fruitful enjoyment!

wishing you happy planting,
