Where to Plant

Sunlight: Full sun is essential for the best berry production, meaning your plant needs at least six to eight hours of direct light. While it can tolerate very light afternoon shade, less sun usually results in fewer fruits and a higher risk of fungal issues due to slower drying of the foliage.
Soil: This raspberry thrives in deep, well drained soil rich in organic matter. If you have heavy clay that stays soggy, plant in a raised bed or a mound to keep the "feet" dry, as stagnant water quickly leads to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Boyne Raspberry two to three times a week to ensure the root system stays moist while it anchors into the ground. Mature plants are moderately drought tolerant but require consistent moisture from flowering through harvest to prevent the berries from shriveling or becoming bitter. If the soil becomes bone dry during the heat of summer, the plant will prioritize survival over fruit quality, leading to a smaller, disappointing harvest.

Pruning Tips

Boyne is a summer bearing variety that produces fruit on two year old canes, known as floricanes. In late winter or early spring, remove any canes that fruited the previous year all the way to the ground because they will not produce again and only block airflow. Thin out the remaining new canes to leave about six inches of space between them, which gives the plant a "clean haircut" and allows sunlight to reach the center for larger, healthier berries.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, all purpose organic fertilizer in early spring just as new growth begins to emerge to fuel the intense energy needed for fruiting. Avoid applying high nitrogen fertilizers after mid summer, as this encourages tender new growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost. Using a layer of arborist bark chips or compost as a mulch can also provide a slow release of nutrients while keeping the shallow roots cool.
