#ProPlantTips for Care:

If you are a gardener in USDA planting zones 6 to 10, then this sun, heat, and humidity-loving Gardenia is for you! Grow Gardenias in full sun in cooler growing zones, but appreciate some afternoon shade in hotter climates. Gardeners in USDA zones 6 to 7 should plant their Gardenias in a container and bring them into a protected location during cold snaps or bring them indoors as a houseplant during the winter's worst temperatures. Any bright, indirectly sunny window will do. Simply acclimate them indoors gradually then acclimate them back outside in the spring as well.

Well-drained soils are necessary, so if you suspect poor drainage - mound up or keep your shrub in containers, especially if you have heavy, soggy soil. Establish the root system the first year with careful attention to watering, then, put your Gardenias on a regular schedule of watering for best flowering. Apply mulch over the root system, and pull it away from touching the stems. Prune to shape as needed right after the first flush of flowers has finished.

  • Full Sun Is Best & Afternoon Shade In Hotter Climates
  • Winter Protection For Zones 6 & 7
  • Loves Mulched Organically Rich Acidic Soil
  • Well-Drained Moist Sites
  • Prune After Flowering
  • Deadhead After Flowers Fade

Amazing flowers, fragrance and foliage you love in Gardenias but in dwarf form! Crown Jewel Gardenia is a great opportunity to have the amazing flowers, foliage and fragrance of a dwarf Gardenia, but in a small form that fits well in any sized garden. Order one of your own today at Nature Hills!

dwarf

The dwarf nature was exactly what I wanted from the crown jewel gardenia. I bought the 3 gallon sizes. They showed up in great shape although I did notice when planting them that roots were wrapped around the dirt on the inside of the container. I got the impression they had been in those containers quite a while.

Dear Baggy,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with the Crown Jewel Gardenias! We’re delighted to hear that the dwarf size perfectly met your expectations and that the plants arrived in great shape.

We appreciate your keen observation about the root condition. Sometimes, especially with popular sizes like 3 gallons, plants do spend some extra time developing in containers to ensure strong root systems. It’s wonderful that you noticed the roots wrapping around the soil – when you plant them, gently loosening or teasing those roots before planting can help avoid any future crowding or root-bound stress.

If you’re looking for extra care tips, gardenias thrive well in acidic, well-draining soil and appreciate regular watering with humidity. Feeding them during the growing season with an acid-loving plant fertilizer can also support their blooms.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you want personalized guidance as your gardenias grow. Thanks again for your trusted support!

Rooting for your garden’s success,

Hello Baggy,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughtful feedback about your Crown Jewel Gardenia! We’re delighted to hear that the dwarf size perfectly fits your vision for your garden. It’s wonderful to know that your plants arrived in great shape.

We appreciate your observation regarding the roots being wrapped around the soil inside the container. It’s not uncommon for plants to develop some root circling if they’ve stayed in a container for a while. When you plant your gardenias, gently loosen the roots with your fingers or make a few small cuts along the outer root ball to encourage healthy fuller root growth in their new environment. This simple step often helps the roots spread out more effectively and strengthens the plant’s establishment.

If you’d like, you can also mulch around your planted gardenias to help retain moisture and protect them during temperature fluctuations. Crown Jewels appreciate consistent watering and thrive in well-draining soil rich in organic matter.

Should you have any questions about ongoing care or want additional tips for your gardenia’s best growth, feel free to reach out anytime. We’re here to support you!

For happy watering and rooting success,

Give it room

My crown jewel gardenias have spread out quite a bit. Over 6 feet across. I never realized how fragrant they were. I love mine, just give them room to spread out & you'll be fine.

Hi Murray,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your Crown Jewel Gardenias! We’re delighted to hear that you’re enjoying their wonderful fragrance and the way they’ve spread out beautifully. It’s such great advice to give them ample room to grow—gardenias do love that space to really thrive and show off their charm.

If you ever want to encourage even more blooms or keep them looking tidy, lightly pruning after flowering can help maintain their shape and promote new growth. Also, keeping them in well-drained, acidic soil and ensuring they get plenty of indirect sunlight can maximize their vibrant health and aroma.

We appreciate you trusting Nature Hills for your gardening journey and hope your garden continues to abound with beauty!

Bloom on,
