Fast-growing and carefree, the Thornless Honeylocust Tree (Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis) is an attractive, fast-growing tree. It would be perfect for your street or driveway due to its hardy, adaptable nature. Your Thornless Honeylocust tree is easy to grow, so it will consistently provide its admirable features without a lot of work from you.
Its delicate pinnately compound leaves are finely textured, displaying a graceful shimmer in the lightest of breezes and casting a relaxing, filtered shade. Delicate flowers will appear in the spring, pristine white and gracing your yard with their sweet fragrance. You may not see the sprays of blooms but pollinators are quick to seek them out!
The early yellow leaf color and the way the wind plays through the lacy leaves will draw your eye. Then the yellow-gold fall foliage will light up your landscape in the autumn before dropping and fluttering away in the breeze - making fall clean-up a snap! The bark lends winter interest with its fissured, grey bark with an orange-tinted interior that becomes even more interesting with age.
Hardy and resilient throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 9, there is little that fazes these trees - not heat, sun, cold, deer, compacted soil, saline conditions, or urban pollution!
Planting and Application:
If you'd like a tree to cast dappled shade over a walkway, a parking lot or driveway, or a backyard entertainment area - then this is the tree for you! Honeylocust trees aren't fazed by street or air pollution, salt, compacted soil, or a whole range of soil types, including challenging soil conditions. You can also use Honeylocust as a bright accent specimen tree.
Your turf grasses can grow beneath it. Pretty perennials or small shrubs for partial shade can easily establish and grow for you directly underneath it. Shade your backyard entertainment areas or reduce cooling costs in the summer by situating this tree 10-15 feet from your home to block the sun in the summer but let light through in the winter once the deciduous leaves drop.
Recommended for wherever a large shade tree is required, the Thornless Honey Locust works in large parking lot islands or buffer zone plantings. Municipalities have used Honeylocust trees as street trees because of their great adaptability to soils and tolerance where road salt is used.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant in full sun and nearly any well-drained soil and then enjoy seeing up to two feet of growth each year with your fast-growing Thornless Honeylocust - without having to fuss or fret over it. Thornless Honeylocust is quite hardy and tolerates a variety of conditions including drought, salt, and urban environments! Once it's established in your soil, it will be quite drought-tolerant. Top the soil with a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch - especially when planted in the lawn. Create a buffer zone extending 3-4 feet from the trunk to protect the bark from mower damage.
Honeylocust trees do not mind some pruning and don't mind being shaped to match your preferences. Pruning the low branches doesn't detract from the tree's appearance and it's almost seedless, so raking isn't an issue either. You can even easily transplant it should you decide to try a different location.
