Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Size | Actual Volume | Metric Equivalent |
---|---|---|
2" x 2" x 3" | 0.18 - 0.21 dry quarts | 0.20 - 0.23 dry liters |

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 8-10
Your garden needs some zip! Get the Zizanie Gladiolus (Gladiolus 'Zizanie') that are incredible red and white streaks, stripes, patches and randomized variations on each petal! Add vibrant punctuation to your garden beds and borders! The big flouncy petals take their turns opening from the bottom to the top of the 3-4 foot tall flower spike that provides you with 2 weeks or more of fantastic color!
Gladiolas form tight clumps of vertical sword-like green leaves and perfectly complement the high-reaching architectural blooms! Plant a few extra groupings of these hardy corms throughout the garden to provide you with plenty of tall flowers for upscale vase arrangements! Butterflies and the occasional Hummingbird drop by to sip the nectar too!
Also known as Sword Lilies, these are positively eye-catching erect growth and alternating symmetry! Growing throughout USDA growing zones 8-10 as a hardy perennial bulb, the midsummer blooms work as annual accents in all other growing zones. Northern growers can dig the corms up in the fall once the foliage has yellowed and store them for the winter in a frost-free location.
Planting and Application:
Long-lasting color in both the vase, the garden, and in planters! A single spike can bloom for a couple of weeks, but if you want a longer display, plant a few corms every two weeks apart for a staggered bloom all summer! Zizanie Gladiola works great in planters and mixed containers as a spiky focal point and vertical specimen. Ideal sculptural accents throughout both existing garden plans and established landscapes.
Create drifts and rows in tight spots, along paths and walkways, or against a fence line or rock wall for height and color! Perfect cottage garden and courtyard plants, these blooms have both a formal and informal look anywhere! Gladiola are must-haves for pollinator gardens and cut flower borders! There are few locations that won't be able to find a few inches of room to tuck these vertically growing, space-saving corms in among the garden bed or borders plants each spring.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Gladiolus in full sun or partial shade in a protected location for the strongest growth. For windy sites and very tall stems, some staking is recommended to keep the blooms from flopping. Plant these corms in very well-drained, organically rich soil that has moderate, consistent moisture.
Deadhead after the flowers fade and keep the leaves until they turn yellow. This way the corm stores food for next year. Then in fall, lift your bulbs out of the ground and store in a nylon stocking or brown paper bag in a cool, dry location with good ventilation above freezing. Each year you'll notice more and more little corms forming around the base of the parent corm for more blooms each year!
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Organic Well-Drained Soil
- Deadhead After Blooms Fade & Prune or Dig in Fall
