Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this tree at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate partial shade, full sun ensures the strongest stems to hold up those heavy flower heads and produces the most vibrant pink color.
  • Soil: Plant in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. If you are working with heavy clay, amend it with compost or peat moss to improve drainage and prevent root rot, which hydrangeas hate.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, check soil moisture daily and water deeply whenever the top inch feels dry to help the root system establish. Once established, this panicle hydrangea is more drought-tolerant than other varieties, but consistent moisture is still key for large, healthy blooms. If the leaves droop in the afternoon heat, it is usually a sign they need a drink.

Pruning Tips

This hydrangea blooms on new wood, so the best time to prune is in late winter or very early spring before new growth begins. Treat the "head" of the tree like a shrub, cutting back the previous year's growth by about one-third to create a rounded shape and encourage strong new stems for blooming. Snip off any suckers growing from the base or along the main trunk throughout the growing season to maintain the tree form.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a slow-release, granular fertilizer formulated for woody plants or roses in early spring as new leaves start to emerge. Avoid fertilizing after mid-summer, as this can push soft, new growth that won't have time to harden off before winter frost hits.
