Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Native Butternut Trees (Juglans cinerea), also known as White Walnut Trees, used to be all over the American forest! While overshadowed by their Walnut and Pecan cousins, the native Butternut has an appeal that sets them apart from the rest! We are delighted to be introducing this stronger strain of White Walnuts, grown from a hardy local seed source to your home garden and woodland areas!

The bark is smooth and pale white or gray in color, earning them the White Walnut name, and adding wonderful contrast compared to other trees in the area. The nuts, which have earned their nickname with a rich buttery-walnut flavor, aren't round like Black Walnuts, instead, they are more barrel-shaped like their Pecan cousins! The nuts grow in green husks that are easy to peel off.

Boasting leaves similar to Walnut trees, the pinnate, tropical-looking foliage provides lush shade. Butternut trees are somewhat slow to establish, but once they get rooted in well, they can add a couple of feet or more of new growth in a single season. They produce gorgeous shade on the lawn, and sweet nutmeats, usually within 6-8 years in optimal conditions. These majestic trees have a long history of use in making furniture and supporting wildlife!

Planting and Application:

To say that White Walnuts (aka Butternuts) are prolific trees would be an understatement. We hear accounts every year of people filling the beds of pickup trucks, sometimes more than once, in late summer and early fall with the nuts from just one tree! If you don't enjoy them, we're sure the wildlife, squirrels, and even many types of birds, enjoy these delicious nuts. The foliage and strong limbs offer incredible roosting and nesting sites.

Butternuts taste great in a ton of different baked goods and snacks! The trees themselves are fantastic shade and specimen trees, they create a majestic silhouette in the landscape! Butternuts grow into a rounded, short, and stocky shape with a wide-spreading, open canopy. Long-lived, these are lasting memorial and legacy trees that will provide grandeur for generations!

  • Big Lush Green Leaves & Gray Bark
  • Also Known As Butternut - Edible Nuts
  • Wind Pollinated - Loads Of Nuts Every Year
  • Unmatched Summer Shade Tree
  • Memorial Tree, Lawn, Orchard & Wildlife Tree

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Butternut Trees love full sun and moderate moisture, preferring about any type of well-drained soil. Adaptable and hardy throughout USDA zones 3 through 7, these thrive in a wide range of climates. They are relatively slow growing in alkaline soils that are drier. Younger trees, once established, will grow much faster when planted in fertile, well-drained soils. Prune in late winter when dormant and mulch the root zone well to insulate new trees from heat and cold.

  • Full Sun
  • Prune When Dormant
  • Thrives in Acidic & Alkaline Soils
  • Prefers Loam, Moist & Rich Well-Drained Soil
  • Tolerates Wet & Clay Soil

It takes a couple of years before you can harvest this buttery goodness from your own trees, but Butternut Trees are well worth the wait! Get growing your own food forest now, don't wait to order yours from NatureHills.com today!
