Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 4-9
The Froebelii Spirea Bush (Spiraea x bumalda 'Froebelii') is a colorful 3-season flowering ornamental that kicks the year off with purplish new foliage that contrasts nicely with the bright pink to red early summer flowers! Pollinators adore these fizzy soda-looking flat clusters of blooms!
It is an upright, rounded shrub that is an attractive, neat and tidy plant when not in bloom and the flowers just add to the delight. The purple new foliage transitions to bright green for the summer months and then return with purple in the autumn! It is a vigorous grower with a striking color display.
Hardy throughout USDA zones 4 through 9, these tidy shrubs form 3-4 feet tall and nearly as wide at maturity, and keep that form with little work from you! Their fast growth will give you a fantastic pop of color in a hurry! Compact and bushy, these are fantastic flowering ornamentals for color whether in bloom or not, spring, summer and fall!
Planting and Application:
With a short height and spread, these are great for groundcover and filling large swaths of ground with color. Use to hold soil on hillsides while saving you from having to mow a tricky slope. Top a retaining wall or let Froebelii or line a pathway or sidewalk with low-maintenance flowering shrubs! They're also the perfect size for containers and planters around your porch and patio!
Not only is it beautiful and easy, but it fits the current trend of smaller plants for smaller gardens. Not to worry if you are blessed with a larger garden! Froebelii looks great in big beds and borders and is a fantastic foundation plant and colorful addition to a mixed-shrub border. It definitely plays well with others! Add color to foundation plantings and as a facer shrub to hide the bare leggy stems of larger shrubs and around trees.
- Pinkish-Red Flowers
- Purple Spring & Fall Foliage
- Neat, Tidy & Compact
- Reblooming Vigorous Grower
- Low Hedges, Containers, Mixed-Shrub Borders
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Thriving in most locations, Spirea is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun, plus it tolerates light shade. Froebelii is reported to have better heat and drought tolerance than most other cultivars. Removing faded flower clusters encourages additional bloom. This Spirea flowers on new wood, and should be cut down in late winter or very early spring before they start to grow as they bloom on new wood.
- Full Sun & Nearly Any Well-Drained Soil
- Moist to Average Moisture Needs
- Prune Late Winter & Deadhead After Flowering
- Carefree & Low Maintenance
- Heat & Drought Tolerant
Widely adaptable little shrubs with a powerful color punch for your landscape, the Froebelii Spirea shrub is just the deciduous little reblooming ornamental your garden has been lacking! Order yours today at NatureHills.com!
