The Bartlett pear is the #1 pear in the entire world, but especially here in America. It is an easy grower and a prolific fruiter. Unfortunately, this great performance only happens in northern climes. Try growing this great fruit in Louisiana, Alabama or Florida and you get a whole lot of nothing. Until now!

The south finally has a pear that lives up to its northern brother with aplomb. The Southern Bartlett Pear Tree (Pyrus 'Southern Bartlett') is a beautiful tree that bears delicious fruit despite the heat and humidity. The extra big fruit is drip-down-your-chin juicy. The flesh isn't hard or mealy either, considering how big the pears are. It is super soft and tender, almost melt-in-your-mouth.

Spring starts with the glorious drifts of white flowers that your local beneficial pollinators will be grateful for! Then, the fruit arrives among the glossy green leaves. These early fruiters are known for big fruit and plenty of it! They ripen August through September and pollinate with just about any other pear tree you have.

Planting and Application:

Besides the fruit, it is a fantastic landscape tree with a sweet spreading shape. In places where the seasons are more often marked by the number of tourists coming and going than by the weather changes, Southern Bartlett also offers a nice fall leaf color change by turning gorgeously orange about the same time the pumpkin lattes start popping up in the coffee shops.

Plant one of these modest-sized trees as a specimen or focal point planting in both front or back yard gardens. Let shade seating areas and garden beds, anchor borders and soften the corners of a home or garage. Great for bird-friendly yards, giving songbirds a welcome nesting and roosting habitat.

  • Large Crops of Juicy Big Fruit
  • White Spring Blooms & Great Fall Color
  • Lush Green Foliage
  • Mid-Sized Partially Self-Fertile Tree
  • Perfect for Southern Climates

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Fruit trees do their very best in full sun, and planted in enriched, well-drained soil with moderate fertility and regular water, especially during the growing season. Mulch the root zone very well to keep the roots cool and regulate moisture levels.

  • Full Sun
  • Well-Drained Moderately Moist Soil
  • Loves Mulch
  • Prune When Dormant
  • ~400-500 Chill Hours
