Delivery and Shipping
Shipping
To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.
Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements

Growing Zones 7-9
There are plenty of evergreens to keep your landscape looking warm and vibrant through the long winter months, but most of those require full sun.
Airy and unique, the Soft Caress Mahonia is a fall-flowering, broadleaf evergreen shrub that tolerates partial shade! Your Soft Caress Mahonia (Mahonia eurybracteata 'Soft Caress') provides not just finely-cut, fine-textured blue-green summer foliage, plus fall flowers and provides year-round interest, but does so in those shady spots of your yard that can be difficult to find plants for!
Unlike other Mahonia varieties (with their sharp-edged foliage), Soft Caress Mahonia seems to invite you to touch its soft, feathery foliage of lacy leaves. The long, deep-green leaves are almost fern-like and reminiscent of Bamboo! The graceful foliage is reason enough to value this beautiful shrub, but it offers even more decorative interest for the autumn and winter months.
In late fall and early winter, long racemes of delicate flowers will emerge from your Soft Caress Mahonia, like candles of lemon yellow, shining their brilliance for 2-3 weeks of bloom. The individual flowers on these upright spires appear as round yellow balls all clustered together. As the flowers fade, diminutive berries will appear, their deep blue/black hue lending further decoration through the winter months.
Landscape Application:
Plant these 3-4 foot tall and wide shrubs as mid-sized hedges and screening borders, adding a lush and soft property division. Use groupings and single specimens of Soft Caress for a lovely accent in your Asian-Inspired garden, a beautiful lawn tree when you 'limb up' the lower branches to expose the trunks to create a miniature tree-form!
It's small enough for a container on your front porch, yet large enough to hold its own in a mixed shrub border. Perfect in a shady spot for some subtle color and definition and ideal for modern-sized lots and courtyards because Soft Caress Mahonia is a dwarf variety with a compact habit.
The lacy foliage pairs well with other broadleaf evergreens, conifers, and like-foliage plants such as Sumacs, Heavenly Bamboo, Smokebush, and Mountain Sweet Box.
- Compact Size & Lacy Airy Blue-Green Broadleaf Evergreen Foliage
- Late Season Yellow Spires of Round Florets
- Late Winter to Winter Seed Pods
- Pollinator Friendly
- Great Screening, Backdrops, Hedges, Large Containers & Specimens
#ProPlantTips for Care
Soft Caress is a tough little shrub overall and is even pest and disease-resistant. Plant in full sun or partial shade locations in well-drained soil. New shrubs need regular watering but are low-water usage once established. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around the root system to support root health. Prune in the winter after the flowers have faded, or use renewal pruning techniques to remove the oldest, fattest stems from the shrub and allow younger, more vigorous stems to replace them.
- Full Sun & Part Shade
- Well-Drained Soil Locations
- Moderate to Low Moisture Needs
- Prune Late Winter/Very Early Spring
- Easy to Grow Shrubs
Gardeners revere Mahonia plants for their remarkable features but bemoan their harsh spikey foliage. An award-winning variety, Soft Caress Mahonia allows you to enjoy the good features without the bad! Imagine one of these gracing your yard this year! Order now at Nature Hills today!
