A showy native flowering shrub, the Smooth or Wild Native Hydrangea Bush (Hydrangea arborescens) bursts into bloom each summer with drifts of white, nectar-rich mop-head blooms that are backed by ornate, quilted green leaves with toothy edges!

Blooming prolifically from June to September the rounded blooms are fantastic cut or dried flowers. Blooms left on the shrub outdoors will become dried and a beautiful creamy tan. Enjoy these as winter interest and texture throughout the sun garden!

Unlike newer varieties that do not have the fragrance or nectar resources that the Wild Hydrangea have for your pollinators and Hummingbirds! These deciduous shrubs grow into 3-5 foot tall and wide, rounded flowering bushes throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9.

Planting and Application:

Hydrangea have always been a garden standard, so why not enjoy a fragrant native shrub with all the perks of their cousins? These are fantastic wildlife shrubs that are as ornamental and at home in a formal garden as they are in the wild understory due to their tidy rounded growth.

Hydrangea bushes are native to moist or rocky wooded slopes and can be found growing along stream banks and in rich woodland soils. Fantastic wildlife shrubs for a naturalized hedge or screen that will attract birds to nest and roost among the dense branching.

Moist soil gardens and around your foundation near where the gutters drain, Native Hydrangeas fit perfectly among Rain Gardens and help slow and filter runoff from driveways and parking lots. The dense root systems are fantastic for erosion control along stream or pond edges and on difficult-to-mow slopes.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Smooth Hydrangea Shrubs prefer average, medium moisture and well-drained soils in part shade. They tolerate full sun only if grown in cooler climates or with consistent moisture and plenty of 3-4 inches layer of mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. Fertilize regularly and prune these plants in late winter because they bloom on new wood. Read more about Hydrangea Care in our Garden Blog.
