Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Golden Spirit will tolerate dry soil and prefers anything well-drained, Smokebush requires full sun to have this glorious color! These can be late to leaf out in spring, but once they do, they will become a knock-out specimen shrub! Tough and tolerant shrubs, they tolerate drought and dry soil once it is established. With minimal pruning, it will naturally form a large shrub or small tree over time. Provide regular moisture for young plants until they get established. Apply a 3-inch layer of wood chip mulch around the plant to keep the root system cool and moist.
These deciduous shrubs prefer good air circulation is another important consideration. Please don't plant too close to buildings, fences, or walls. Allow this shrub to reach its full glory and prune these shrubs in the early spring only.
- Full Sun For The Most Color
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Drought Tolerant Once Established
- Prune In Early Spring
- Deer Resistant & Hardy USDA 5 to 9
