Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Every landscape needs a focal point, and this mid-sized native selection would fill that role beautifully. The Shore Pine Tree (Pinus contorta var. contorta) is a dark green Conifer that grows into wild, twisting shapes with fine-textured whorls of long, slender needles!

Growing native along the coastlines of Alaska and south into Northern California, not minding the salty air. Imagine what they'll look like in a Midwestern yard with its constant windy conditions! Or planted lakeside, or along the Coast, or even along a busy street. This is a tough, widely adaptable tree that can handle salt spray, earning it the common name - the Beach Pine!

If you aren't buffeted by high winds every day, the tree will develop into a broad rounded canopy, but will still have a contorted trunk, earning it the name Twisted Pine. People have used Shore Pines for generations to produce miniature Bonsai trees because of their divine visual interest.

Incredibly hardy throughout USDA growing zones 2 to 7, the Shore Pine is amazingly cold-hardy and rugged! Wildlife and songbirds love taking shelter in the broad limbs and foraging for seeds in the elongated pine cones that appear in the fall.

Planting and Application:

Plant this as a single specimen as an evergreen shade tree, or plant a row of them as a natural, dense windbreak or screen. You will really love the soft needles and the amazingly fresh scent of real pine! Each one will be unique, a standout in its own right!

Slow the prevailing winds to slow drifting snow and wind erosion with a stand of these hardy native Evergreens. Create shade year-round as well as privacy without the hassle of a fussy tree. Shore Pines are no divas but stand out nonetheless! You will love the year-round dark green hue when including Shore Pines into mixed screening borders, and luxurious shelterbelts for birds and wildlife.

  • Dark Green Needles Held in Pairs
  • Rugged Native Evergreen
  • Handles Wind & Salt Spray
  • Great to Train As Bonsai!
  • Faster Growing Conifer
  • Elongated Pine Cones For Wildlife
  • Windbreaks, Privacy, Harsh Windy Conditions & Specimens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Handling drought, poor soil, cold, and neglect, about the only thing that will set the Shore Pine back is too much shade or soggy soil! This variety of Pine needs full sun to perform at its best. If you need to encourage a denser canopy or want to reduce size, candle pruning in the spring is the best method.

You may notice Pines developing some yellow interior needles that will drop in the fall. This is completely normal as the tree will regrow new fresh growth. Keep this free Pine Straw under your tree for a layer of protection from cold and moisture loss, or rake it up to use elsewhere in your garden!

  • Full Sun Native Evergreen
  • Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Tolerates Drought & Neglect
  • Prune in Early Spring
  • Very Hardy & Adaptable

Rugged, adaptable, and extremely cold-hardy! We are pleased to offer this windswept native beauty. Order your Shore Pine Tree from Nature Hills today!
