Understanding Our Container Sizes
At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

Container Sizes
Quart
Plant age: 6 months to 1 year
Best for: Ground covers, perennials, ornamental grasses
What to expect: Our smallest and most affordable size. Well-suited for planting in multiples across a large area. Allow 1 to 2 seasons for full establishment.
#1 Container
Plant age: 1 to 2 years
Best for: Shrubs, perennials, smaller trees
What to expect: About the size of a large coffee can. A well-developed root system in a manageable size. Good value choice when you have time to let the plant grow into the space over a season or two.
#2 Container
Plant age: 2 to 3 years
Best for: Shrubs and trees where you want faster establishment
What to expect: A noticeable step up from a #1 in both plant size and root development. Good choice when you want visible presence without going to a larger size.
#3 Container
Plant age: 3 to 4 years
Best for: Most plants, most situations — flowering trees, shade trees, evergreen shrubs
What to expect: Our most popular size. Strong, developed root system. Plants in a #3 container make an immediate visual impact from day one. If you want a head start rather than waiting seasons for a plant to fill in, this is typically the right choice.
#5 Container and Larger
Plant age: 4 to 5+ years
Best for: Specimen plants, privacy screens, maximum instant impact
What to expect: Large, mature plants ready to make an immediate statement in your landscape. We also carry #7 and larger sizes for select varieties.
Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?
Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.
Root Pouch Containers
Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:
- Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
- Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.
Not sure which type you have? Check the tag on your plant or contact us and we will confirm.

Description
Memories live in fragrance they say. So many of our customers have shared fond memories of special moments when the Lilacs were in bloom. That's why we have cultivated such an extensive collection to share with you! If you adore the exhilarating scent of Lilacs, you'll want to find room for this extraordinarily fragrant variety.
Cool-toned Scentara® Double Blue Lilac (Syringa x hyacinthiflora 'SMNSHBBL') is a super-hardy hybrid cultivar with excellent fragrance. In spring, it's covered in clusters of purple buds that open into fully double, icy lavender-blue and blue flowers.
Scentara® Double Blue Lilac is going to change the way you look at Lilacs, or at least change the way you smell them! This is the most fragrant introduction by Proven Winners®. Cut a few of these big, classic Lilac panicles in shades of lavender-blue for indoor arrangements to perfume your home. Not only will you enjoy the flowers and fragrance, but you'll also be treated to a fall color display when the heart-shaped leaves burnish with a purple overcast. Not many Lilacs can offer you that!
Lilacs are one of nature's long-lived wonder plants. Butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators cherish the nectar-rich flowers. Even birds will love the dense foliage for shelter and nesting, but deer tend to leave it alone.
Planting and Application:
It is a great specimen plant when highlighted on its own merits, but it also partners well in a mixed shrub border along your back fence. Carve out a special spot to read in a sunny side yard, shielded from view with a Scentara® or two. You'll relish your private time outdoors in a secluded, private destination spot in your own yard. After the cool purple blooms are passed, you'll have attractive green foliage all summer and rich purple tones for fall.
Enjoy both their sight and scent! These space-saving plants work well even in smaller lots. Grow them in the ground, or place them as terrific thrillers in oversized modern containers. Even renters can accomplish this trick. Plant Scentara® in a big resin pot and grow it on your balcony for a blissful retreat. Enjoy!
With a lovely shape and those fantastic double florets in spring, Scentara® is a good choice to anchor foundation plantings. Plant 10 - 15 feet out from the corner of your home, and expand your mulched bed to highlight it. This same idea can be used at a corner near your garage. A single specimen helps ground your home to the surrounding property, and you'll love its fragrant charm - as will butterflies, pollinators and hummingbirds!
This new go-to Lilac easily handles temps down to -50 degrees, so it is great in cold-winter zones. Grow them up along the border of Canada. Use them on the windy side of a lake house. Use a long row of these fragrant Lilacs to define your property line in a very friendly fence. Add plenty and you'll create a useful cutting garden and privacy screen all in one.
Why not jazz up the sunny side of existing windbreaks and shelterbelts with these cold-tolerant Lilacs? Mix with the purple flowering Sentara Pura® Lilac for double the beauty! You'll love their color, scent and the easy-breezy fluttering foliage that catches the wind. Use them along a wide driveway, angled against the prevailing wind—to help catch snow before it hits the pavement. In bloom, you'll have a very welcome homecoming.
Plant them five feet apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next. Stagger a double row for the fastest results.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Lilacs are easy to grow in full sun, with at least six hours of direct sun a day. Limb up mature trees to provide more sunshine, if desired. These shrubs can handle the arctic cold and can be kept outside all winter. Give it well-drained soil, too. They will not tolerate wet feet, so elevate your planting site if needed in a raised bed. Water a medium amount on a consistent basis for best results. These durable plants are tough, but we recommend you protect your investment with regular water; especially for container-grown plants. Apply mulch over the roots for insulation and moisture retention.
Disease and deer-resistant so you'll be saved the time and trouble of dealing with costly measures to keep it safe from harm. If you live with deer in your area, apply repellent spray on planting day. Deer are hungry and curious, and you want to train them to leave your plants alone. Reapply according to the label.
Scentara® Double Blue Lilac blooms on old wood. Prune right after the flowers are done, so you do not remove next year's flowers. No one needs that kind of preventable tragedy! Don't miss a single bloom! Follow these easy Pruning steps for the best flowering. The goal is to open up the shrub to good air circulation and more sunshine.
If you are growing in a lawn setting, please ensure that you keep the lawn fertilizers away from this plant. These are high-nitrogen formulas and will reduce the number of showy flowers you get to enjoy. Stick with a fertilizer formulated for flowering plants. Instead, apply an all-purpose fertilizer for blooming plants in early spring. Reapply in mid-summer, following label directions for application rates.
