Where to Plant

Sunlight: Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to ensure the heaviest flush of those cherry-red blooms. While this tough shrub tolerates partial shade, too little light results in leggy branches and significantly fewer flowers.
Soil: These roses crave well-draining soil and struggle in spots where water pools after a rain. If you are dealing with heavy clay or loose sand, mix in organic compost at planting time to improve drainage and nutrient retention.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply two to three times a week during the first growing season to help the roots anchor into the surrounding soil. Once established, the Red Knock Out® is surprisingly drought tolerant, but consistent moisture is still the secret to continuous blooming. Avoid overhead watering when possible to keep the foliage dry and free of fungal issues.

Pruning Tips

Plan to prune in early spring just as the small leaf buds begin to swell along the stems. Cut the bush back by about one-third or down to 12 inches to stimulate vigorous new growth, which is where the new season's flowers will form. This annual "haircut" keeps the shrub dense and prevents the center from becoming woody and unproductive.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release rose fertilizer in early spring as soon as you see new green growth emerging. You can do a second light application in early summer to support the next wave of blooms, but stop fertilizing by late summer. Late feeding encourages soft, tender growth that will likely be damaged by the first winter freeze.

Understanding Our Container Sizes

At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?

Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.

Root Pouch Containers

Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:

Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.

The glorious Red Knock Out® Shrub Rose (Rosa 'Radrazz') is a remarkably hardy shrub that produces amazing red Roses. Every single bloom is a stunning cherry red with a diameter of up to 5 inches, and a soft, Tea Rose scent. The Roses continually bloom, but even if there's a slight pause, you'll enjoy how the new leaves begin their lives with a reddish tint, later transitioning to dark green. When autumn arrives the foliage changes once again to a deep purple shade. For winter, the orange hips will seem to pop out amid the dreary landscape like tiny ornaments amid the dark branches.

The brilliant red flowering Knock Out® Rose comes alive with more cherry red than green. Its blooms offer a luxurious display on a low-maintenance plant. You can pick them for a whole anniversary party, fill table bouquets and vases all season, and still have plenty left to enjoy on the plant. Much to the pleasure of your pollinators who arrive to check out your blooms!

It has excellent hardiness and disease resistance so doesn't always need the fungicide treatments that many other Roses do, and is generally maintenance-free. It's even drought-tolerant and only requires three hours of sunshine a day for its bloom (unlike many other Rose varieties). Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 through 9 and grow to a modest 2-3 feet in height, but spread a nice 3-4 feet in width!

Planting and Application:

It's that rare variety of Landscape Shrub Rose that you can plant and enjoy without a lot of fuss. The tidy spread of this long-blooming Shrub Rose makes it as perfect as a Groundcover Rose for flowering ornamental 'living mulch' between larger shrubs and as edging along pathways and the edges of garden beds.

No property? No problem! Plant them in a pot, and use Knock Out® to decorate your sun-drenched balcony or porch. Just give yourself and your guests some "wiggle room" to move past it, as those thorns are no joke! Larger planters and year-round porch pots will add long-lasting blooms to your patio and even balconies! The butterflies will adore the blossoms and stop by for a visit.

For the best performance, Roses need full sun, good air circulation, and well-drained soil. Enjoy their engaging red flowers and small green leaves for many years! Plant Shrub Roses in a location with good air circulation and provide regular, moderate moisture access. All plants enjoy a topdressing of 3-4 inches of arborist mulch. These Roses are disease-resistant to black spot and powdery mildew and also adapt to a variety of conditions.
