Growing Zones
Showy bright red blooms and dark red stems, you'll see why the Red Cauliflower Sedum (Sedum telephium 'Red Cauli') got its name when you see it in full bloom! The fluffy, fat, densely-packed flower clusters look exactly like heads of cauliflower! But no eating this ornamental, leave it for the bees and butterflies to feast on! The bright color even brings in the hummingbirds!
Red Cauli still has the succulent gray green foliage you'd expect from Stonecrop but with a burgundy-red blush to the foliage. Forming clumps of upright straight stems that can begin to fan out as the flowers become fully open, they paint a pretty picture in the sun garden!
This Succulent is an herbaceous perennial and grows USDA growing zones 3 to 9 and only grows 8-12 inches tall when in bloom and can spread 18-24 inches wide. Highly xeric and easy to grow, these tough little plants are low-maintenance once established!
Planting and Application:
Red Cauliflower Stonecrop is the perfect sun garden plant for late season flowers! Add these bright dollops of color to Pollinator gardens, Rock Gardens, front yard berms and along your driveway, or throughout those sun-baked, drier locations around your property for easy Xeriscaping!
If you've run out of room in the landscape, fear not, simply use Red Cauliflower Sedum in your pots and planters as colorful fillers, spillers and thrillers! They play well with others and show off in the late summer and fall months and won't mind if you forget to water them every once in a while!
However, the fantastic color of Red Cauli will make you find places throughout your garden to use it! Its adaptability and easy-going nature means it's perfect for use in the harshest locations your landscape has to offer. Use on slopes and hard to mow hillsides, in that hell-strip along the road or sidewalk, or around your mailbox planting that may receive low moisture, splashes of salt in the winter, and poor soil.
- Reddish Stems Topped With Bright Red Dense Flower Clusters
- Soft Succulet Gray-Green Foliage Tinged Burgundy Red
- Fan-Shaped Mounds Defy Sun & Drought
- Brings In Pollinators & Hummingbirds
- Great Edging, Tricky Garden Locations, Massing, Sun Gardens & Container Gardens
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Sedum needs to be planted in full sun in well-drained soil. This perennial will tolerate most soil types and is very drought resistant. It actually prefers drier soil! In fact, plants that are grown in rich, moist soils may produce heavy, weaker growth that flops as the flower heads develop. If this sounds like your soil, simply plan to snip back the new growth by a few inches as soon as your stems reach about a foot tall. Don't worry, they'll soon produce new flowers on the shortened stems, but the stems will be much sturdier for you.
Be sure to leave the stems and flowers on the plant standing, even after a frost comes as they provide winter interest and even dried decor. The seed heads turn a dark brown color and remain rigid and erect to catch and sculpt the snow all winter long. You'll love this fantastic addition to your winter garden. It's easy enough to do a quick cleanup in early spring. Just cut the dried stems down to the ground.
- Sun-Loving Hardy Succulent
- Thrives in Almost Any Well-Drained Soil - Poor Soil Tolerant
- Regular Moisture At First - Drought Tolerant Once Established
