Plant your Butterfly Bush in full sun with at least six hours of direct sunlight a day for the most blooms and best health. They need well-drained soil and water regularly their first year, but then these waterwise plants appreciate supplemental moisture and a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch over the root system.

Deadhead the spent blooms for a longer-lasting performance and rebloom until fall. In spring, cut your plants back to about a foot in colder climates because these shrubs may die back to the ground and act like Perennials.
