Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This plant thrives in full shade to partial shade, ideally receiving only 2 to 4 hours of gentle morning sun. Avoid direct afternoon sun because the dark, glossy leaves will scorch or wilt significantly in high heat.
  • Soil: Aim for rich soil that feels like a wrung out sponge, staying consistently moist but never swampy. If you have heavy clay, mix in plenty of compost or aged bark to improve drainage and prevent the roots from suffocating.

Watering Requirements

During the establishment period, check the soil daily to ensure the root ball never completely dries out. Once mature, Pandora is quite thirsty and will visibly "faint" by wilting its leaves if it goes dry, though it usually bounces back quickly once hydrated. Consistent moisture is vital because prolonged drought stress results in smaller leaves and fewer yellow daisy flowers in the autumn.

Pruning Tips

Since this plant grows from a central clump, you only need to remove old, tattered leaves at the very base in early spring before new growth emerges. Think of this as a spring cleaning that allows fresh, dark purple foliage to take center stage without being crowded by last year's debris. Because it blooms on the current season's growth, you can also snip the flower stalks off at the base once they fade to keep the plant looking tidy.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as you see the first new leaves unfurling. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this can force tender new growth that will not have time to harden off before cooler weather arrives. A simple layer of organic mulch around the base also provides a steady stream of nutrients while keeping the roots cool and moist.

Think outside the box! Pandora Ligularia (Ligularia dentata 'Pandora') adds a deliciously dark, bold-textured look to semi-shaded areas with soggy soil. Like all Ligularia, this choice has a lot of personality. Pandora adds an architectural element with strong color and leathery dark leaves.

Finely-toothed leaves are broad and reflexed to catch rainwater. Kids love to study their tiny reflections in these miniature natural pools. No one can miss this showy display! The mounded, clumping foliage can spread 18-20 inches wide and fill in areas gradually with their dramatic dark foliage!

Butterflies appreciate the water, too! The blooms are held on leafless stalks above the robust mound of foliage. They'll also be delighted to visit the broad, flat centers of the ray-shaped blooms that appear in summertime. The slender petals are a strong yellow-gold with dark purple centers!

This durable compact Ligularia only looks dramatic! Care requirements are actually minimal, and take moments of your time each year.

Planting and Application:

Decorate a low-light moist Cottage Garden or Rain Garden to filter runoff from roofs and streets before it flows into the storm drain. Or, simply plant it to turn a depression in your lawn into a feature area! Fantastic around boggy shady sites, around your water features, and moist dappled shade woodland gardens!

Turn the north side of your home into a wildlife habitat. Plant Ferns, Sedges, Goat's Beard, and other water-loving shade perennials alongside them for a perfect partnership! They'll be magnificent under an Eastern Redbud or Weeping Pussy Willow planted at the water's edge. Plant a huge-leaved Colocasia as living artwork in your garden. Then, amp up the impact with dwarf Pandora Ligularia at its base.

Add several in a mass planting to create a prominent focal point. You can easily weave them into your perennial borders and keep Pandora as an exceptionally showy garden container, as well!

  • Dark Purple Leaves - Stiff & Serrated
  • Lustrous Fan-Shaped Leaves Make a Big Impact
  • Strappy-Petaled Yellow Summer Flowers - Feature Purple Centers
  • Pollinator-Friendly Selection
  • Held Above the Mounded Clump-Forming Foliage
  • Easy Care Accent, En Masse, Containers & Shade Garden Specimens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

In warmer climates, the thick leaves remain evergreen in hotter USDA planting zones 6 to 9, and do best in full shade to partial shade locations throughout your landscape. Best planted with consistent moisture and in rich, well-drained soil. These perennials appreciate a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around their base, just be sure to keep the mulch pulled away from the crown. Deadhead the flowers after they fade and clean up the mounds in the autumn after frost.

  • Excellent in Partial to Full Shade
  • Grows in Moderate to Wet Soil
  • Tolerates Heavy Clay Soil
  • Deadhead After Flowers Fade & Prune After Frost In Fall
  • Deer Don't Usually Mess With Leopard Plants
