Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Palmetto® thrives in full sun but is the most shade tolerant of the St. Augustine varieties. Aim for at least 4 to 5 hours of direct sunlight; while it handles dappled light better than others, deep shade will result in a thinner turf and slower recovery from foot traffic.
  • Soil: This grass prefers well drained, sandy or loamy soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. If you have heavy clay, incorporate organic compost before planting to improve drainage and prevent the stolons from "suffocating" in waterlogged ground.

Watering Requirements

During the first two weeks of establishment, keep the plugs consistently moist with short, frequent waterings twice daily. Once the root system is anchored and the grass begins to spread, transition to deep, infrequent watering of about 1 inch per week to encourage deep root growth. Inconsistent watering or allowing the soil to bone dry will cause the blades to fold and turn a dull bluish-gray, signaling the plant is under stress.

Pruning Tips

Think of mowing as a regular haircut that encourages the plant to grow "out" rather than "up." Maintain a height of 3 to 4 inches to shade the soil and keep the root system cool. Never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade at a time, as scalpimg the lawn shocks the grass and opens the door for weed seeds to take hold.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a high-quality, slow-release nitrogen fertilizer in the spring after the grass has fully "woken up" and turned green. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers in the late fall or winter months because this can force new, tender growth that is easily damaged by a sudden frost. A balanced approach ensures the grass stores energy in its roots for the dormant season rather than wasting it on top growth.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

St. Augustine plugs are Easy to Install. Irrigate the ground thoroughly several days ahead of planting, then maintain soil moisture consistently afterward. Apply a light amount of organic fertilizer. Install by punching 1-inch holes in the ground. We recommend planting the plugs one foot apart. Gently remove the plugs from the tray by pushing them up from the bottom. Do not PULL them from the top as this may damage the roots.
