The petite North Star Cherry (Prunus cerasus 'North Star') proves you do not have to be large to be mighty! This smaller Cherry Tree impresses gardeners everywhere with its ability to bear ample amounts of tart cherries early in its life. So, if you're looking for a whopping amount of cherries without giving up a lot of space-- the North Star has your name all over it!

What else makes the North Star Cherry uniquely outstanding? Well, the cherries, of course!

North Star Cherries pack a punch! They're mouth-puckeringly tart and juicy. They're a sour cherry with a refreshing sweetness that makes them a pleasure to eat fresh. They are also large cherries that are ideal for baking.

It's no wonder so many people say that summer is the best season when you own a cherry tree. This one gets the party started early by beginning its harvest season during the mid-summer months.

These cherries look as good as they taste! They are an even and bright red that deepens to ruby as they ripen. When still on the branch, they even look as if they could glow.

Not only is this little tree a powerhouse producer, but it's an absolute pleasure to have in the garden. The North Star Cherry reaches upward with outstretched branches to form a striking vase-shaped habit.

These elegant branches become even more striking when covered in snow during winter. When they catch the light, you will be treated to a display of highlights and shadows that ask to be photographed.

Spring brings a bountiful amount of blooms! These dainty, elegant blossoms are romantic and charming. And their classic bumblebee-yellow stamen look like they've been kissed by the sun itself.

How to Use USDA Organic North Star Cherry Tree In The Landscape

The North Star Cherry is both prolific and ornamental, which means it fits perfectly into the veggie garden or landscape. Its highly adaptable nature also makes it quite versatile.

You can plant this self-fertile beauty individually as a corner feature by your driveway, in the backyard, or on your property line. This colorful and attractive dwarf tree also makes a great specimen in a driveway circle.

Or you can plant several as ornamentals that line your driveway, add height to your garden bed, repeated as a mixed border, or as a corner marker of your property.

The North Star Cherry lives up to some of the most floriferous Cherry Trees. In fact, it's like owning a Flowering Cherry Tree with the added bonus of abundant and delicious cherries!

These flowers aren't just for looks. Along with your neighbors, your local pollinators will adore your North Star Cherry's blooms. As for birds, they do love the sweet taste of cherries, but this variety will produce enough for you to share.

North Star Cherries are fantastic for the classic pie cherry, outstanding for jams, jellies and preserves, and simply frozen to use for baking, muffins and bread.

If you have the pleasure of your own North Star Cherry, do us a favor and use some for halving for a celebratory charcuterie board. One of the often overlooked benefits of these versatile and tart cherries is being able to pair them with a wide variety of cheeses and meats.

#ProPlantTips For Care

The North Star Cherry appreciates full sun and well-draining soil. It also performs best with good air circulation. Plant Cherry Trees in at least 6 hours of sunlight per day in USDA growing zones 4 through 8. Cold hardy, these are resistant to many diseases and fungal issues.

Prune fruit trees in winter and train the branches for the best form and fruit production. Staying under 10 feet tall, you won’t have much work to do. It's best to prune branches that droop. Prune in spring to remove suckers and water growth, plus to open the interior for sunlight and air.

Water your North Star Cherry during the growing season if you haven't received rain in about a week. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.

Tolerant of a wide range of soil types, anything goes as long as it’s planted in well-drained soil. Add Nature Hills Root Booster while planting for a life-long symbiotic relationship with the tiny feeder roots.
